Claude Monet est né a Paris en 1840. Monet passe en fait l’essentiel de ses années de jeunesse au Havre où ses parents se sont établis. Adolescent, il se révèle doué pour les caricatures. Son père et sa tante lui envoient un peu d’argent mais c’est insuffisant. Monet commence pourtant à avoir une petite réputation car en 1865 et 1866, quelques-uns de ses tableaux sont exposés au Salon, LE rendez-vous annuel des peintres français.

C’est le point de départ de la création d’un jardin aquatique. Il fait tracer des allées, planter des arbres et des massifs. A partir de ce paysage d’eau et de verdure, Monet produira plusieurs tableaux dont la fameuse série des Nymphéas. La peinture de Monet qu' est à l'origine di nom "Impressionisme" c'est "impression, soleil levant" presente en 1874.
