Pasados esos seis meses, deben introducirse alimentos complementarios

ENGLISH

Questions and answers.

Q: What foods are recommended for children in their early years?

A: Breast milk is the best food for the baby to grow and develop healthy. During the first six months of life the infant should be fed exclusively on breast milk for their growth, development and health are optimal. After those six months, adequate and safe complementary foods should be introduced, combined with breastfeeding for at least two years.

Complementary foods should be rich in nutrients and should be given in sufficient quantities. Caregivers should begin to introduce those foods at six months in small amounts, gradually increasing rate as the child grows. Young children should receive a variety of foods, including meat products, fish and eggs as often as possible. Infants can eat pureed food, mashed and semi-solid from 6 months; from 8 months can be given to most children various foods that can be eaten by hand, and after 12 months can usually eat the same products that the rest of the family. Food should have a consistency suitable for the child's age. Complementary foods should be given about 2-3 & nsbps; twice daily between 6 and 8 months, increasing to 3-4 times daily between 9 & nsbps, and 11 months. Between 12 and 23 months should be given to eat & nsbps about 3, or 4 times a day. And depending on the appetite they have can add 1 or 2 & nsbps, nutritious snacks between meals.

In addition to providing adequate variety and quantity of food at the proper frequency, it is important for caregivers to demonstrate sensitivity to feed the child. That is, should feed infants directly and assist older children when they eat alone; feed them slowly and patiently and encourage them to eat, but not forced; when they refuse to eat different food combinations were tested. Mealtime should be a time of learning and love: a moment to talk with children and make eye contact with them.

These are the recommendations of the Global Strategy for Infant and Young Child, jointly developed by WHO and UNICEF ins
