Jarvis (2006) claims that humanity remains an unfinished project which requires all human beings to keep on learning unceasingly throughout their lives.

Lifelong learning allows adults to exercise their freedom in choosing what they want to achieve, to become active and involved in social activities and to create a knowledgable society. 

There are over 40,000 learning institutions for older adults which enrolled over 4.3 million learners (Xiao, 2012).
