"The Story of an Hour"

I found the story very ironic given the woman thought her husband had died and began looking forward to a long life when she had less than an hour to live. I understand the time frame in which it was written, but still feel the woman was ungrateful for a husband that appeared to love her very much. She should have told him how she felt about their life together and what he could do to make it more fulfilling for her. I chose to link "Say Hello to Heaven" by Temple of the Dog for this reading since it is about death and the lyric "poor stargazer, she's got no tears in her eyes" reminds me of how I feel for her husband given she seemed to be getting over his death within an hour.

I believe this writing came from the childhood of the author as she grew up in the 1950s & 60s on a rural island in the West Indies. While the mother in the story comes off as harsh today, she obviously cared enough about her child to pass on what she thought it took for her to be a successful mother or wife. It's hard to still not feel bad for the child as she must find all the advice coming at her quickly very overwhelming. I linked Diana Ross' song "Do You Know Where You're Going To" because the child's view of her future adulthood had to look hard.

I think a lot of readers jump to the conclusion that the woman's husband killed the bird. Has anyone considered she was practicing her killing skills on the bird to warm up? Perhaps she could not figure out "why the cage bird sings"? Possibly put the bird out of his misery? Maybe the bird constantly asked her when she was going to clean the house? Things that make you go hmmmm......

A story of a woman suffering from severe postpartum depression that turned into obvious psychosis. I believe her husband, who was a doctor meant well by moving her to a summer house away from everyday stress and by having his sister care for the baby. I believe the story illustrates just how little was known of mental illness at the time and perhaps if he had just listened to her, spent more time with her in and outside of the house she would have shown improvement before it got so bad.

The narrator was cursed by his grandfather's words to believe that by conforming to the white man was the way to gain acceptance from them and by the end of the story I dont feel he truly believed he had achieved acceptance. The battle royal in the story symbolizes the fight African Americans endure for racial equality.

This story can be summed up with the American Dream not working out for you. A tragedy about the differences between the Loman family's dreams and the reality of their lives. The song link is to the song "Whats up? by 4 Non Blondes. I guess I have always kind of summed up this song the same way, failure and frustration with not fulfilling your American dream and the peculiar line falls right in tune with Willy's "peculiar" delusions. Lyrics from the song: Twenty-five years and my life is still
Trying to get up that great big hill of hope
For a destination

I realized quickly when I knew I should
That the world was made up of this brotherhood of man
For whatever that means

And so I cry sometimes
When I'm lying in bed just to get it all out
What's in my head
And I, I am feeling a little peculiar
