What I'm sharing is not a lesson plan, but the program for a Spring Concert I did in 2016 during the Year of Mercy. It demonstrates how to use the lyrics of songs that are not specifically religious and discover how those songs reflect (or don't reflect!) certain aspects of our faith, in this case the Works of Mercy. I didn't tell the students ahead of time what Work of Mercy I was thinking of for each piece, and I let them discuss it and offer their own thoughts and opinions. The conversations we had about these pieces of music led to high level thinking about faith, values, and how to find God in all things.

Attached you will find not so much a lesson, but my bulletin board devoted to music for the Mass. The blue paper shows a verse or the refrain to our Hymn of the Month, the pocket chart reviews the liturgical season, and the clip chart shows the parts of the Mass that will be sung by the choir and congregation.

At. St. Bernadette school, we sing the seasonal Marian antiphon after the final blessing at school liturgies. Teaching these chants is no easy task, but I find that the children have success with them when we start at the end of the chant and work backwards. Attached you will see 'Salve Regina' (back from the Fall) written on sentence strips. The dots represent the neumes in kid-friendly chant noation.

We have been looking at folk songs from all over the world, and the week before St. Patrick's Day seemed like a great time to look at the different versions we know of "An Irish Blessing". Depending on grade level, we learn movements, dances, creating ostinato patterns, etc. We also discuss how music changes more when it's learned aurally than it does once it's written (as this hymn appears in Breaking Bread), and demonstrate this concept through sending a written note around, then playing telephone. We also discuss the deeper meaning of the prayer (originally Celtic, author unknown, though some scholars think it was actually written by St. Patrick himself):

May the road rise up to meet you.

May the wind be always at your back.

May the sun shine warm upon your face;

the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again,

may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

* "May the road rise to meet you..." -- asks for God's blessing on your life's journey, and that it may not be too challenging
* "May the wind be always at your back..." The reference to wind is thought to be a reference to the Holy Spirit, who came as a “mighty wind” at Pentecost.
* The sun’s warmth alludes to God’s mercy and comfort

*The mention of rain is thought to be symbolic of God’s provision – nothing will grow without the rain.
