Why
The government is a very important stakeholder in child obesity. The go

vernment their job is to protect the citizens and make their lives as good as possible. But with the child obesity issue, children die early due to heart attacks and children live very unhealthy. So the first stake the government has in child obesity is that it effects their nation in a bad way. The second stake the government has in the child obesity issue is that they are one of the most important and powerful "players"

who can prevent child obesity. They can make laws against food

advertising, or make rules about maximum amount of sugar in food products. These are just some examples, but you get where I´m going.
Narrative
Every governments I have read about speaks negative about child obesity, but they all deal with the issue a different anyway. For example; the English government set up a big plan to fight child obesity.

In the plan, they are not only encouraging consumers to eat healthier,

they say that they are also going to force food producers to reduce the sugar in their products. They obviously also focus on producers and importers, while on the other hand, in the Netherlands the government mainly focus on the consumers. So in England the government takes more responsibility towards the child obesity issue, while in the Netherlands, the government makes the consumers the "͚villains" and places itself more in the background.
Frame
- the government frames child obesity by selection, they don´t mention positive things about child obesity

Food industries

Why

The food industries are by far the largest stakeholder regarding child obesity since they are the manufacturers of our food. They decide what kinds of products they make, what kinds of ingredients they choose or add and how much of it will be produced. They decide everything when it comes to what we have on our plates and it’s no secret that healthy food is more expensive than for example products with more fat or sugar. The food industries therefore have a certain amount of control on what a parent will buy for their household. People with less income are more likely to opt for less healthy food than people with more income, which in return leads to their children more likely to become obese than children with wealthier parents.

Narrative

As manufacturers they cannot ignore the cry against obesity in general. They are making modifications to their production programme and state that the issue should be addressed and dealt with by all of us. They are playing a less bigger role in preventing obesity than they do in manufacturing food but are slowly forced to start making changes. They are willing to comply to the wishes to the world, but not as swiftly as the world wants them. They should help their consumers more to make healthy food choices or come with new healthier products to address the issue more.

Frame

They are spinning, making modifications to stores so that more healthy food will be sold, lowering calories and sodium in products or adding free fruits and vegetables to menu’s instead of fries or chips and offering free refills on low-fat milk. They are however selective, since they control the food in the first place and say there’s no need for blame or finger pointing and that we all need to do what we can to help the wellness of children.

Fastfood industry

Why

The fastfood industry is an important stakeholder on the issue of child obesity because they saw a chance profiting from the increasingly more customers living the on-the-go lifestyles. It is easier for people to grab something quickly at McDonald’s than to spend effort themselves either preparing or going out for a meal. The fastfood industry knows this and use it well. Most of the time the food they offer are not healthy, which leads to the fastfood industry attributing to the issue regarding child obesity. Not to mention they have Happy Meals to combine their influence and that of the toy industry to get more childs to try to convince their parents to go to McDonalds.

Narrative

Fastfood industries can easily be seen as an enemy when it comes to child obesity. They themselves however do not see it that way. After a nine year old girl asked him why he didn’t offer healthier foods for kids at a shareholder meeting, McDonald’s CEO Don Thompson denied that his company contributes to childhood obesity and implied parents are responsible for what their kids are eating, adding they also have salads, apples and smoothies on the menu. They see themselves neither as hero nor villain, saying the responsibility lies with the parents and that as a company they are merely an option that can be used however the customer likes. Since the fastfood industry formed from capitalistic ideas, it can be assumed this is the general opinion of the fastfood industry when it comes to child obesity. Nonetheless, people with lesser wealth are more likely to choose unhealthy food than people with more wealth and the fastfood industries are the ones who make the most profit out of this statistic.

Frame

The fastfood industries frame child obesity as something that is a parental choice and has little to do with what food they offer the public. This is a rather salient attitude when it comes to child obesity, since they themselves a playing a big part in the issue.

Liposuction surgeons

Why

When people feel bad about their obese size and are out of active lifestyles, they might opt to go for a liposuction instead. Some doctors, in America for example, see that obesity has become such a big issue that they choose to specialize only in liposuctions in the hope that they can provide the best quality for the job and through that a lot of customers. These men’s jobs are more in danger the more obesity is addressed and dealt with. They have reasons for it not to be addressed and that makes them a small stakeholder in this issue.

Narrative

In their point of view the growth of obesity is something that threatens their paycheck. They themselves might think of themselves as artists for removing fat and making people look nice again. However, as professionals of the medical aspects they also cannot ignore the issue being at large and only getting larger. Since liposuction only makes it look better but does not remove the actual weight liposuction is not really a solution to the problem and they know it better than anyone else. Hippocrates himself forces these doctors to address the problem… eventually, but not right now.

Frame

They frame obesity not as something bad to have but something that can be hidden. They frame themselves as the heroes who could make this dream of some obese people reality without having to do the effort of an active life.

Toys industries

Why

Children diagnosed with any level of obesity are likely to show a decrease in playing actively outdoors. They might be afraid that they will be ridiculed for their size or they might just like it more to play indoors instead of outdoors. Therefore the toy industry is an important stakeholder in child obesity. For example, buying an introverted obese ten year old child a Playstation 4 has a certainty of decreasing that child’s amount of movements, which in return leads to less fat being burned. Once bought, all the different kinds of toys a child has can have an impact on the child and because of that the toy industry has a reasonable amount of influence towards the child.

Narrative

The toy industry themselves are proud of the role they play in child development. The American Toy Industry Association released a statement in which they address the issue regarding child obesity directly, agreeing with parents and medical professionals calling to reform what has been changed, discarding more passive play for a return to more active play for the sake of play itself. They frame the parents and medical professionals as heroes who addressed the issue, and the increase in child obesity as a problem which requires to be addressed and dealt with. They see active play at an early age, in all its forms, as essential for living happier and healthier lives and have therefore established The Genius of Play initiative. The Genius of Play is trying to achieve exactly what the name implies, showing the world the genius of what play really is. It’s trying to show us that play isn’t all fun and games, but can also be an important teaching tool in the physical, emotional, social, cognitive, creative and communicative parts of life. The ATIA do this because they say the number one priority for them is to protect children at play. I chose to narrate the ATIA because the United States of America are also worldwide leaders on the issue of child obesity, and therefore the American people have put more effort into finding a solution to the problem than any other nation in the world.

http://www.toyassociation.org/PressRoom2/IndustryStatements/Toy_Industry_Association__TIA__Statement_on_Play_and_Healthy_Lifestyles.aspx#.V_46VCTsSUk

http://www.thegeniusofplay.org/

Frame

The ATIA are clearly spinning. They say they now not only see the positive things toys have brought children but also the negative things such as child obesity, and are joining the fight against the issue. They have launched a website that shows what play, according to them, really should be and it’s definitely something that’s worth to take a look at when you look at the issue of child obesity as a whole. They are leaving out that this issue might have been prevented from scaling this much, but they are doing a good job of trying to fix the issue now.

Why
Lobbyists are stakeholders in the issue of child obesity, because lobbyists can interfere with bills being passed to prevent obesity. Lobbyists aren’t all people with the same opinion, so it could go the other way around as well. Lobbyists can contain people that are of the opinion that these bills only take away freedom of choice and therefore shouldn’t be passed in the US. Lobbyists can also contain food companies that would suffer financially due to these kinds of bills being passed. Lobbyists aren’t defined by their beliefs, but by the fact they can influence lawmakers so a bill will/won’t be passed. So that means that there are also companies that would profit from obesity prevention bills and thus will influence prevention laws so they will be passed.

Narrative
Due to Lobbyists not being defined by their beliefs, there is no general narrative.
