The book starts with Ruthie saying, “When we lived in Cuba I was smart. But when we got to Queens, in New York City, in the United States of America, I became dumb, just because I couldn’t speak English.” What do we know about Ruthie, based on this opening line? What else can we infer? What kinds of things do you expect from a book after reading this first line?
Answer

We know that she is frustrated because she’s not in the smart class

even though she was smart in Cuba. She had to prove to her teacher that she was smart enough to be in the smart class by spelling the word commiserate. When she got the word right she was so happy because then her teacher said that she could transfer to the smart class on Monday. I feel bad for Ruti because if I was considered dumb just because I spoke a different language I Wouk be mad to. That’s also being very judge mental to Ruti just because she speaks a different language. We know about Ruti based on the opening line that she dose not take it when people say she is dumb because she was very mad when she got put in the dumb class just because she speaks a different language. I also think she is not stopped by any thing because Ruti and her friend both wanted to be in the smart class they wanted to ask the teacher if they could transfer to the smart class but Ramu didn’t want to ask instead Ruti asked with no problem as if nothing was going to stand in her way to be in that smart class. After reading the first line I expect the book to be like, big and outgoing with a lot of changes that Ruti and her family face but also some really great memories and moments. For example, when Ruti’s dad got her white gogo boots that she really wanted, when Ruti’s dad bought Izzie some toy cars and when Ruti’s dad bought himself a car. But some bad times are when the family gets into a car accident and Ruti broke her leg and now has to wear a body cast so she doesn’t grow and cause one of her legs to grow more than the other. I believe that Ruti will face a lot of hard and good times and I hope she will get through them all. In conclusion I think people should not be judged on their language that they speak. I wonder if in the book will their be any more unexpected/bad news like the body cast didn’t work or that Ruti isn’t allowed in the smart class ever. I think that this book will be great and full of surprises which makes me want to finish reading it even more also I could already recommend this book to people but also by reading just one part of it I would rate this book a 10/10 book because I love it so much and I never want to put it down.

Question 6: Ruthie’s mother always cries because she misses Cuba, but Ruthie’s Baba says, “We can’t keep looking back.” What can you infer about the family’s relationship to Cuba? What about their new relationship to the United States? Compare and contrast Mami’s experiences in Queens and in Cuba. I think there relationship with Cuba is strong especially Mami’s. But in some places it is weaker. In Mami’s perspective all she wants to do is go back to Cuba because she feels that if they did not come to America they would not have gotten in a car accident and Ruthie wouldn’t have had to be in a body cast.

CQuestion 12
Ruthie talks about her big and her small wishes—her small wish is “to look out the window and just see the world” (56). In what ways is this wish bigger than Ruthie realizes?
This wish is bigger than ruthie realizes because other people in the accident are probably wishing that to and most likely she will have her wish granted and they won’t. That s why she is a lucky broken girl. Also being able to be outside is a privilege than some people do not have.
Question 18
When Ruthie puts on Danielle’s old go-go boots, she learns to trust her leg again. Why do you think this is the case? What do the go-go boots represent for Ruthie now?
I think she learns to trust her leg with danielle’s Go go boots on because the go go boots reminded her brain that her leg is way stronger than it was at the accident and that she can trust it like she did before the accident.

Ruthie really wants a pair of go-go boots like Danielle’s. She’s always walking around singing the popular 60s song “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’.” She can’t believe it when her Papi gets her a pair. What do go-go boots represent (symbolize) for Ruthie?

Answer

In my opinion, the boots give her confidence to be in the smart class and make her very happy. Ruth wants to we’re them every we’re she we’re them to school, bed, in the car, mostly every we’re. But not to play so she won’t get them dirty. According to the text on pg.28,” Guess what?” I announce proudly. “My father just got me go-go boots too!” “So why aren’t you wearing them?” Danielle replies “ I don’t want to get them dirty I say. She loves her go-go boots that much she won’t get a crumb on them. What go-go boots do for her is they make her think we’re she is now then we’re she was then. In the chapter crying about Cuba, all Mami and Ruth thought about was Cuba they cried a lot but not in the next chapter. In the next chapter Ruth gets her very own go-go boots at that point she totally forgets about Cuba. It tells her we’re safe here we will be fine here. Which her go-go boots she is the happiest girls on the planet. According to the text on pg.39 it states, “I feel so happy and grown-up wearing my go-go boots.”after answering this question i now know how much the go-go boots mean to her.

Ramu is Ruthie’s first friend at school, maybe because they are both new immigrants who feel like they shouldn’t be in the “dumb” class. What else makes them get along so well?
Answer
Ruti and ramu May get along so easily, not just because their both in the “Dumb” class, although that is a pretty good reason,or that their both immigrants , but there’s many more reason why they could be friends. For example, relating to the dumb class, they both knew they were both smart but were in the class because they were both immigrants. At first it was only ruti that would be going to the “smart” class by spelling commiserate while Ramu didn’t. But since Ruti is a good friend, she almost begged for ramu to have a second chance. You need a friend that helps you like Ruti did to Ramu.On the plus side, they both got in the smart class in the end.In conclusion,I think Ruti and Ramu are good friends for different reasons and that’s a good thing. They both have differences and simaliar things about them as well. That’s why they are both great friends. Different and alike makes a great friendship.

What about their new relationship to the United States? Compare and contrast Mami’s experiences in Queens and in Cuba.

Awnser
Ruthie and her family have lived in Cuba since who knows and you can infer that the entire family wants to try and start a new life but it’s hard.thats why baba is probably saying “We Can’t keep looking back.” Imagine moving away from a place you have known by heart since you were born. Hard to forget but trying to move on? That’s how ruthie must feel.I infer that why Ruthie’s mother is crying so often about Cuba, because it was her first home and you never forget your first home. They have a different connection with the United States then they did with Cuba.for one example, the relationship with The United States is new while Cuba is there older relationship. So far,the United states has made good memories and terrible ones . On of her terrible memories was the car crash. Then I bet she just wanted to go back to cuba, wishing nothing like this ever happened and everyone was happy. But instead, she was in a bodycast not even being able to use the restroom for herself. And yet, there were happy moments too. For example, when daddy bought her the white Gogo boots that she was so proud of.She was one of the happiest people alive then. There are ups and downs when it comes to relationships in general. But personally,I think she will like it in America when she can walk again.Mami has had ups and downs in America too. A few ups were when she knew everyone was alive from the car accident and safe (mostly). But many downs. Thinking she can’t take care of herself like she did in Cuba,or taking care of the children while father was at work. She worked hard to keep the family running in America so they wouldn’ Be homeless or have to go back to Cuba. One of the only differences I spotted in how mami felt toward Cuba and America were that she was more happy in Cuba.In conclusion, I thinkin the end they will like that America is their happy little home.

In the beginning of the story, Ruthie is placed in the remedial class. Now Joy is her personal tutor and celebrates Ruthie’s work. Yet when Joy gives Ruthie a gold star, she says, “I think maybe part of the reason I am getting it is because Joy feels sorry for me” (56). What can we infer about Ruthie’s confidence based on this statement?

Answer
We can infer that ruthie has lack in confidence because everyone is trying to make her seam as she did awesome when she did not do to good. Like when ruthie was home schooled joy would always say she did s good job and always give her a gold star, no matter what.and when her real teacher came to see her she was so sorry, but she only showed that. We could infer she only said that because ruthie was right there. If Ruthie knew that she didn’t really care about her her confidence you be at 0. Even though right now she doesn’t believe in herself later on she probably won’t either.

Also I feel that Ruthie keeps trying to forget Cuba and focus on her new life in cuba

When Ruthie is talking with Papi about how angry she is with the boys who caused the accident, he tells her, “Even good people can do bad things” (72). Do you agree? What would you say to Ruthie about her anger and hate? Why do you think she says that the anger is “a stone in her heart”?

Answer

I think she should be mad but also feel sad for the person who caused the accident. In my opinion she should be mad at the person because of what he did to the people in the accident. An example is, the person who caused the accident killed the other four people in the accident and he parlize one person. Also the car broke Ruthies leg and she has to not move and stay in bed for more than 8 months. But I also think Ruthie should fell sorry for the person, because referring back to what papa said “even good people can do bad things.” The person in the accident could of been good but that night he wasn’t that conscientious. If Ruthie was me I would feel bad because the night it could of been a bad one and everyone in the car died. I would be so sad if I died in a car accident by someone else but his family is probably never going to be happy again. I feel bad for his family and friends and hope that doesn’t happen again.😔
