The patient's vital signs are widely used in healthcare for a variety reasons including the initial patient assessment, cardiac monitoring, and patient procedures. Patients who are high-risk may need continuous blood pressure monitoring. Invasive arterial lines are the current standard for monitoring "beat-by-beat" blood pressure and hemodynamic monitoring (Hastings, 2021). For patients who do not have an arterial line, nurses may perform manual vital signs every few minutes to an hour.

By using VitalStreams, a disposable finger sensor is connected to the patient's finger tip while connected to a  portable monitor that is attached to the patient's wrist.  The sensor will measure the patients vital signs, aortic pressure and hemodynamics in realtime. The continuous monitoring  minimizes any gaps in blood pressure and clinicians can detect early warnings signs and order the necessary interventions without delay. By replacing the current methods to monitor patients blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation, and respirations, patients do not need to be connected to cords or worry about getting poked for an arterial line. The device should be more comfortable to wear and and has the capability to be used in the hospital and brought home for continuous monitoring. 

The data being collected will be a documented in real time. Clinicians will be notified and they can detect early hypotension, hypertension and other myocardial injury. As a result, the patients will be treated in a timely manner and reduce their chance of death. From a nursing perspective, patients will not be restricted by staying still for their blood pressure read. They will be able to sleep better at night and feel less anxious and exhausted during the day. By utilizing this device, the patient will have a better overall experience.
