A Case study on a fake news which is viral on social media:

A video is doing the rounds on WhatsApp that claims that Italy went against the World Health Organization (WHO) and performed post-mortems on COVID-19 patients, and found that the disease is caused by a bacterium that causes blood clotting, not by a virus. It suggests that Italy has apparently discovered that the microorganism which causes COVID-19 is a bacterium and not a Virus. This bacteria is responsible for clotting blood and hindering the transport of oxygen throughout the body and worsens with 5G electronic radiation. The video goes on to say that Italy has started using 100mg of Aspirin for treating COVID-19 patients and COVID-19 patients are recovering from aspirin tablets. (I have attached a video below which is telling the same news).

Truth:

WHO did not issue a diktat saying that post-mortems shouldn't be performed on people who died from COVID-19. COVID-19 is caused by a virus called SARS-CoV-2, not bacteria. According to WHO, COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the most recently discovered novel coronavirus. Also, one study published in the journal Nature says that blood clots, large and small, are some rare symptoms of COVID-19. This is a Fake news and WHO and the government clarified that “Coronavirus is a virus and there is no specific medicinal cure available yet.”

A Case study on the black lives matter movement that was supported worldwide through social media

The Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement began online when the co-founder Alicia Garzia shared the hashtag ‘#BlackLivesMatter’ following the murder of a young black boy named Trayvon Martin in 2013. The BLM movement has relied on the social capital of platforms, such as Twitter and Facebook, to spread its message. Today, the BLM movement, following the tragic murder of George Floyd, is now a global human rights movement, with protests taking place daily in all 50 states of America, as well as in over 20 countries worldwide.

In the past few weeks, countless witness accounts of police racism have gathered on social media in the form of videos and images. The circulation of such evidence has gathered tremendous support on sites such as Instagram and Twitter, with each share bringing in hundreds of views every hour. This level of engagement, the scale of the movement, and its impact through mainstream media outlets is large, which is especially important with regards to the impression of protests that the public has since been gathering.

Moreover small businesses owned by black people are getting more support that also improves their financial conditions.

Case Study:
Fake news spread on social media about COVID 19:

The whole world is trying to find a cure for this hazardous virus know as Covid- 19 while some of us are spreading fake news/rumors on such as.
In July 2020 the President of the US also known as Donald Trump retweeted a false video about an anti-malarial drug being a cure for the virus and later it was revealed that Russian Intelligence is spreading disinformation about the crisis through English Language Websites.
Experts worry that the effect of bad information is dangerously reducing the efforts to slow the virus, whose death rate in the US hit 1,50,000 in July, by far the highest in the world. Over half a million people have died in the rest of the world.

The Truth:
In July the US Government revoked their authorization of the anti malarial drug as an emergency treatment surrounded by growing evidences that it doesn't work and can have deadly side effects. Even if the drug is effective it wouldn't decrease the need for masks and other measures to contain the outbreak.
None of this stopped Donald Trump, who has repeatedly praised the drug, from retweeting the video. Twitter and Facebook began removing the video for violating policies on Covid-19 fake information, but the video had already been viewed over a 20 million times.
There are many other theories doctors, journalists etc are trying to lie about the threat of the virus to hurt Trump politically.
Social Media has expanded the claims and helped believer find each other. The flood of fake information has posed a challenge for Facebook, Twitter and other platforms, which have found themselves accused of censorship for taking down virus misinformation.

Disapearing Needle

BBC News footage is being passed off as "proof" on social media that Covid-19 vaccines are fake, and that press events showing people being injected have been staged.

The clip, from a report which aired on BBC TV this week, is being shared by anti-vaccine campaigners. They claim fake syringes with "disappearing needles" are being used in an attempt by the authorities to promote a vaccine that doesn't exist.

Two screenshots labeled "Misleading". Both show a photo of a syringe without a needle being removed from someone's arm. The posts say "Propaganda! What happened to the needle?!?" and "Another video showing you it's all a scam, it was NEVER about the virus"
One version posted on Twitter has had more than 20,000 retweets and likes, and half a million views. Another major spreader of the video has been suspended.

The posts use genuine footage showing healthcare professionals using a safety syringe, in which the needle retracts into the body of the device after use.

Safety syringes have been in widespread use for over a decade. They protect medical staff and patients from injuries and infection.

It's not the first time claims of fake needles have appeared since vaccine roll out began.

One showed an Australian politician posing with a syringe next to her arm, the needle clearly covered with a safety cap, with claims that her Covid-19 vaccination had been faked.

But in reality, it showed Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk posing for the cameras after receiving a flu vaccine in April. The video has had close to 400,000 views on Twitter.

Photographers had asked for more photos because the real injection happened too quickly.

Case Study: Treating COVID-19 in a Patient with Multiple Myeloma

APR 03

2020

Tocilizumab shows promise in addressing COVID-19 symptoms for people with blood cancers

(WASHINGTON, April 3, 2020) — A case study of a patient in Wuhan, China, suggests that the immunosuppressant tocilizumab may be an effective COVID-19 treatment for very ill patients who also have multiple myeloma and other blood cancers.

The report, published in Blood Advances, also suggests that blood cancer patients may have atypical COVID-19 symptoms.

The patient, a 60-year-old male who had been diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2015 and was on maintenance therapy, was hospitalized in February for chest tightness and shortness of breath. Although he did not show symptoms of cough or fever, he tested positive for COVID-19 and his illness was classified as severe.

Treatment with antiviral and corticosteroid therapies did not fully resolve his symptoms. On the second day in the hospital, a chest CT scan showed that the patient had ground glass opacities in his lungs, which are a characteristic of pneumonia. His levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), a pro-inflammatory cytokine, were high. After one intravenous administration of tocilizumab, the patient’s IL-6 levels decreased. Three days after tocilizumab treatment, his chest tightness had resolved; 10 days later, his CT scan had cleared and he was discharged from the hospital.

“Our patients with hematologic malignancies are immunosuppressed, which may put them at higher risk for novel coronavirus infection. What are the characteristics of COVID-19 in patients with blood cancers? What is the optimal treatment approach? Everything is unknown, and that was the motivation for this study,” said Changcheng Zheng, MD, of the University of Science and Technology of China and the study’s lead author.

Tocilizumab is commonly used to treat cytokine release syndrome, a systemic inflammatory response that occurs in response to treatment with certain types of immunotherapies. Dr. Zheng and his team suggest the agent may treat COVID-19 by addressing the acute severe inflammatory response, or “cytokine storm,” that the virus triggers. However, they emphasize the need for more research into the potential mechanisms of action.

Dr. Zheng also suggests that because the patient had chest tightness and shortage of breath without other COVID-19 symptoms, specifically cough and fever, clinical symptoms of the virus may not be typical in patients who have hematologic malignancies.

The research team hopes this case study may offer insights and stimulate more research. “Tocilizumab was effective in the treatment of COVID-19 in this patient with multiple myeloma, but further prospective and randomized clinical trials are needed to verify the findings,” said Dr. Zheng.

In March 2020, the FDA approved a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase III clinical trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of intravenous tocilizumab for the treatment of adult patients with COVID-19.

Blood Advances, is a peer-reviewed, online only, open access journal of the American Society of Hematology (ASH), the world’s largest professional society concerned with the causes and treatment of blood disorders.

Blood Advances® is a registered trademark of the American Society of Hematology.

While the world battles between optimistic news of vaccines rolling out globally and the horror of new strains of the coronavirus being discovered, some people on social media have come out with a ploy to spread panic in these sensitive times.

According to the claim made by some using an edited picture, injecting the COVID-19 vaccine will turn humans into zombies.

A screenshot of a television news bulletin has gone viral on social media, which shows blood splattered around in a decrepit hospital ward. There is a 'CNN' logo in the picture that attempts to legitimize the bizarre headline - "Breaking News: Hospitals on lockdown as first Covid vaccine patients start eating other patients," with a text at the bottom reading "Nancy Pelosi arrested for DUI".

This claim has gone viral on Facebook. Some people are also sharing it on Twitter.

This is a spoof photo, with the time stamp reading '4:20 PM' meant to be used as a meme.

Interestingly, the Nancy Pelosi news item surfaced online a while back, which was later found to be a false claim when checked for facts. Having said that, the consequences of fake news of this sort are far-reaching, especially with a lot of pseudoscientific news against vaccinations doing the rounds globally.

The Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) at India Today has deemed the viral image as morphed, with the picture depicting an old incident related to the treatment of gunshot victims in North Philadelphia, US.

Using reverse image search, the team at AFWA found the picture associated to a report dated February 14, 2019, by The New York Times.

Also Read: Oxford-SII's 'Covishield' likely to be Indias first COVID vaccine

For the report covering the treatment of gunshot victims, the caption read: "The trauma bay in the emergency department at Temple University Hospital after resuscitation efforts failed."

The picture has been credited to Eric Curran, a medical student who described the distressing event in his article.

Originally a meme

Researching further, AFWA found that the screenshot was after all not made out of malice, and was indeed supposed to be ironical. The screenshot was discovered on ifunny, a meme website.

Nancy Pelosi fake news

In another fact refuting the veracity of this screenshot, the claim of Nancy Pelosi being arrested for DUI had been debunked by websites like Tampa Bay Times and Politifact a little while after they came out.

Nancy Pelosi is the speaker of the US House of Representatives

Also Read: COVID-19 impact: Japan bans new entries of foreigners after virus variant arrives

COVID-19 vaccine side effects

The safety levels of the COVID-19 vaccines have become a recent issue of contention among experts and the public alike. While scientists are not sure about the potential long-term problems caused due to COVID-19 vaccines, some instances of people experiencing adverse events after getting the jab have been recorded globally.COVID-19 complications

In further research about SARS-CoV-2, findings show that it can lead to several neurological complications, including strokes, seizures and movement disorders. "These particular complications of COVID and neurological disorders more generally, are about your ability to interact meaningfully with the world," Dr Pria Anand, an assistant professor of neurology at Boston University was quoted by CNN as saying.

While it is true that there have been some short-term side effects experienced by a few people after getting inoculated, having an anti-vaccine temperament is a pseudoscientific endeavour the world cannot afford at this moment. And while this screenshot was made for the purposes of humour, a joke can easily turn into fake news on social media.

A viral message, claiming that the Disaster Management Act (DMA) has been implemented across the country, according to which nobody except the government can update and post coronavirus related information on social media, is false.

The viral message further warns WhatsApp group admins to take note of this development, and to propagate the same. The message attempts to add credibility to its content by misquoting and misinterpreting an article by legal news website LiveLaw.

The message carries LiveLaw's link of the story. According to LiveLaw's report filed on March 31, the Central government had sought a direction from the Supreme Court to prohibit the publication of COVID-19 related news by news media, unless the facts are ascertained by the mechanism established by the government. But it is important to note that the Supreme Court refused to give any such directive in favour of the government.

The misleading viral message states: "Dear All, Mandate for All: Tonight 12 ( midnight) onwards Disaster Management Act has been implemented across the country. According to this update, apart from the Govt department no other citizen is allowed to post any update or share any forward related to Corona virus and it being punishable offence. Group Admins are requested to post the above update and inform the groups. Please adhere this strictly."

Please click on the image for clear view.
