Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918 in South Africa.
Mandela's family was supposed to be chief and leaders of their tribe, but he lost his title, so they had to move to a smaller village (Qunu) where there was no roads and only foot paths that had different livestock pastures. Families lived in huts.
Mandela was also baptized at a Methodist Church.
He was the first in his family to go to school and one of the teachers gave him his name Nelson.

This is Qunu today, the village Mandela grew up in.

Although he did go to school, he learned many things from his father, who was a tribal councilor, which helped him in his leadership skills later on in life. When his father died, his guardian enrolled him in Clarkebury Boarding School. The traditional path would let him complete school in three years, but he finished in only two. Later, he went to Fort Hare University, which was the usual college for Thembu royalty. There, he joined the student council, but later had to leave the school due to a boycott he was involved in. Mandela went to the University of South Africa and earned his Bachelor of Arts studies. Then, he studied law at the University of Witswatersand, where he became involved in the African National Congress. He was later arrested for conspiring to overthrow the state and he continued his education in prison, where he also educated fellow inmates and staff.

The ANC was shot down, and many members, including Mandela were arrested.

Once the ANC was banned they weren't allowed to speak publically or protest anything about apartheid; Mandela did speak and during one of his speeches, he pointed to white guards that were protecting the speech and said that they are the enemy. He said that we need to fight back because violence is the only way to get our point across. The next night when he was sleeping the police came and had a warrant for his arrest. He was accused for treason and sentenced for life in prison.
