The bear was hungry and when it comes in it tries to eat the oatmeal but the oatmeal is too hot and the bear leaves after it trashes the house. While all of this happens Lyddie takes control of the situation when she spots the bear and she hides her family to keep them safe. The bear frightens Lyddie's mother (who is mentally unstable) and makes her leave with Lyddie's siblings. Lyddie's mom wants Charlie and Lyddie to go with her but Charlie still thinks that their father is coming. Lyddie and Charles sell the calf to Quaker Stevens. Mr.Stvens had paid 25 dollars even tho the calf was half his. Then, they ate lunch with the Stevens. Their sons drove Charlie to the mill and Lyddie to Cuttlers Tavern where they work. Luke also told them that he will look after their farmhouse while they were gone to work.

Mrs.Cutler tells Lyddie that she doesn;t want her dirty around the customers. Then, she sends her into Triphena in the kitchen so she can wash up.

They did not like the stevens because their mom felt like they was evil and lyddie was envying them because they had money not rich but money and since lyddie and her family had no money the stevens looked rich.
