  • They farmed properties in new France (Quebec) in the 17th to 18th centuries 
  • Habitants also established homesteads (piece of land, usually 160 acres, given to a settler by the government) 
  • The term habitant applied to all those who inhabited countryside or areas like that 
  • They also made a living by growing crops, even if they didn’t own the land 
  • Their status came with certain privileges, like during the colony’s early years, only habitants had the right to small-scale fur trading.
