Choosing a topic helped students get engaged in the beginning and excited to learn more about their topic.

Working on Genius Hour every day during intervention eventually began to feel like a chore for some students and made the project less engaging.

Students felt like they needed more time to work on the presentation part of the project. They were using tools unfamiliar to them and needed more time than the 3 intervention periods they were given.

This project was a good break from an independent reading intervention.

Seventh graders might not have the self-control and discipline to stick to due dates, while working almost completely independently. (our students are 8th graders, but we will loop back to 7th grade next year)

Schedule times for students to work on Genius Hour project, and space the times out appropriately. While there is no perfect solution, I need to make sure students are working on the project often enough to stay interested and engaged, but not too often that it becomes boring.

Use checkpoints with students to make sure they are on track to finish the parts of the project in an appropriate amount of time, and that the research is being completed in a quality fashion.

Ideas to consider:

Break the project down into phases so that students have clear expectations for their project and the timeline

students maintain a blog where they keep a record of their progress as well as field questions or ask for advice from peers

Google Forms to do check ins with students to make sure their project is progressing
