Behaviors become challenging when efforts fail to reduce the frequency, duration, or intensity or a behavior. Some signs of behaviors impacting the child’s ability to learn and develop are:

  • Tantrums
  • Noncompliance
  • Inattention
  • Hitting, kicking, spitting, or punching others
  • Refusal to share, wait, or take turns
  • Excluding other children
  • Breaking or misusing toys and equipment
  • Refusal to cooperate
  • Swearing
  • Shouting
  • Running away
  • Teasing or bullying

Some implications of challenging behaviours are preventing the child from achieving important outcomes or not having much control over the behaviour and wishing that he can change it more than anyone. The other children might become frightened and confused when facing the particular child. They might also not know how to respond or defend themselves when they are confronted with these behaviours.
