Period 2 Areas of Change in America by Kyna Collins

Write your name. Choose 2 different "Areas of Change" and write a few sentences specific issue that needs to be addressed. Avoid generalities like "water pollution" and try to pinpoint a more specific issue such as "the quality of water on and near Indian reservations in South Dakota". For each entry, include a link to a source. Don't focus too much on the category if you get stuck, these are all intersectional. You are limited to issues within the United States. Think local, state, and national!

Once you have posted your 2 "Areas of Change" look through the other posts and pick three other areas to "love" if you agree with that idea.

I believe that teachers should be paid significantly more than they already are in the US. Because of these low wages, the teachers have to work multiple jobs to pay their bills. America is left with a shortage of teachers because of this. This is especially evident in California. To be able to live in California costs an arm and a leg. Studies have shown that if teachers get paid more, it also improves the student's performance.

And it's not restricted to more populated areas like you might expect; the Pinta Giant Tortoise, from the Galapagos, went extinct in 2012 due to "whalers and ship merchants in the 19th century using the animals as food, along with deforestation of the islands" (Schwaller).

Los Angeles is viewed as one of the most beautiful places in the US to nearly anyone, and especially people from outside the country. But over the years, homelessness has risen drastically in most parts of Los Angeles, especially the highly-populated areas. Every single year, more and more people are forced into homelessness. As a resident of LA, I see first hand how bad it's gotten. The main cause to this widespread homelessness is the rising cost of living in LA. Compared ta all the states in the US, California, especially LA, has some of the highest prices on homes and rent. Also, there are very few laws that protect renters from landlords who may be overbearing or unfair. This makes it very hard for people to live independently in LA. This is one of the biggest issues in LA and it needs to be fixed.

An issue that I would like to be resolved is the end of the Two-Party System here in the united states. I would want to end because I believe a two-party system is a very divisive system in the united states because it divides people into two sides and we would see people against each other. In the government, we would see politicians blame the other sides for being who they are. Topics debated on the floor are always two ways either Dem or Rep. Also I believe a two-party system doesn't really represent people the right way because somebody might have liberal views on social issues on things and conservative views on economics or vice versa. Overall, countries in Europe are made up of different political parties which represent the people they want to represent and in those parliamentary governments, we see coalitions come up between political parties which I would like to see in the United States.

The United States has the one of most expensive healthcares in the world, and medicine prices higher than anywhere else. Insulin is a vital medicine to people with diabetes, and it could cost thousands of dollars a month to buy them in the United States, and less than a hundred dollars to get them from countries like Canada or Mexico. The United States federal Government needs to create further limitations on the prices of medical help and vital medicines, because people need these medicines to save their lives, and are being profittes off of by the medical industry.

The San Joaquin Valley, or the Central Valley in California has the worst air pollution in the United States. It consistently fails to meet federal health standards for smog and particulate pollution. The mountains surrounding the valley such as the Sierras trap this air, and the freeways and highways that run through the valley produce significant pollution. Rising temperatures due to climate change play a role in the quality of since the air cannot escape. This pollution leads to health problems, most commonly asthma. People have been trying to solve this by switching to more electric cars and restricting wood burning. Reducing the amount of pollution emitted can also help create jobs, as the EPA funds and works on research to understand clean energy and the effects of pollution.

An area of change that needs to occur in the medical field is the treatment of black mothers. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, African American women die in the perinatal period at 3-4 times the rate of white women. In recent years, the statistic has alarmingly increased despite better technological advancements becoming available. Notably, the maternal mortality rate for Black women has increased from 37 deaths per 100,000 live births to 56 deaths per 100,000 live births in the span of 2 years. Furthermore, African American women are 2-3 times more likely to die from a medical condition that a white woman also has. Many factors contribute to these statistics such as systemic racism, gaps in medical insurance, and a lack of representation in the medical system. To fix racism in the medical field, individuals need to look much deeper by examining how the cumulative effect of systemic and interpersonal racism affects healthcare.

This reminds me of the girl on Dr. Phil who hated black people and identified as a white woman, even though she was a black women. However, in her case, her hatred for black people came from the environment she grew up in, specifically her relationship with her father. I believe that a community should always stick together, and that trying to tear each other apart is useless, pointless, and, overall, unnecessary.

A California study found that, for pregnant women getting C-sections, almost all of whom had no serious health issues and were discharged within 6 days, were charged between $8,312 to nearly $71,000. Medical charges poorly reflect actual costs, and a studies show that California hospitals in areas with a more severely ill population charged significantly more for the same procedures compared to different hospitals. Animal and plant species cannot evolve and adapt fast enough to survive the changing environment.

The U.S. received more than 100,000 Ukrainians in roughly five months following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Notably, Ukrainians who entered the U.S. through the refugee admissions program have a direct path to permanent residency and ultimately, U.S. citizenship. It is devastating to see how the war has affected Ukrainian citizens and no one should have to flee their home and witness destruction. For many other minority groups, these immigration pathways typically take years to complete. The situation with Ukraine is the first time that many individuals have gained empathy for refugees because they are seeing someone like them struggle with displacement.

In the United States, the notion that opioids were safe and not addictive began to take root. However, due to the addictiveness of opioids, patients began to get hooked on them causing an opioid epidemic in America. Regardless of whether it comes in the form of synthetic opioids or prescription opioids, it is hazardous to the user when it begins to be abused. Opioid use in America needs to be more heavily regulated and monitored.

https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-019-02686-2

California is the most populated state in the entire US, and it is also one of the largest, however we don't have a large subway system. This is because CA has created an immense freeway instead, which means that driving is a crucial part of living in California. As an adult, you need to drive to get to work, go out to eat, and go to friends' or families' houses. Everything that there is to do usually requires you to drive, and that means you need gas. California has the highest gas prices in the country, and it really isn't close. From what I've seen, gas has peaked over $6 per gallon just this year. If we look over just to Arizona, it's only $3.50. The main cause for this is because California is a high tax state, meaning that those high taxes are then imposed on our gas prices.

Corporations in America and Their Impact on the Climate Crisis - Ally Harrison

The climate crisis has become a global environmental issue for centuries and is only getting worse with every year. There has been a pattern in these centuries that may clue us into why the climate crisis is only getting worse. The technological innovation of America during the industrial era of the late 19th century had inspired the world to become more industrial, but this industrialization and shift from a rural to urban world has had major consequences for the environment. The United States in particular has impacted the environment negatively through its large, carbon producing corporations. In the linked article above, one of many that points out the United States and its role in worsening global warming, 90 companies in America have been producing a staggering 2/3 of the world's industrial greenhouse gas emissions. These emissions are in the form of burning fossil fuels that these companies use to produce the goods we consume in mass amounts. Companies like these want to maintain their power and profit by denying climate change and global warming. If they do this, they will be able to win the permission of the people to continue emitting large amounts of carbon emissions into the environment and dominate the markets. We need to work as a country to stop giving these capitalistic, profit-seeking corporations the power to deny the issue of global warming to benefit their own wants. These corporations spew out claims that the climate crisis isn't real and that the issue isn't as bad as it is, but in reality it is far worse then they are willing to admit. If we don't take action to limit the production methods of these harmful corporations, global warming and the climate crisis could soon become something that is irreversible. If we let the climate crisis continue by supporting the success of corporations in the climate war, we are allowing our only habitable planet to become destroyed by the people who inhabit it. For these reasons, one of our primary focuses should be to move our trust and support away from big business and industrial corporations to science and truth. This is the only solution.

As the number of homeless individuals living on the streets of California rise, we need to focus our attention to making housing affordable for all. In California the lack of affordable housing options is the root cause of the homeless crisis we are currently experiencing. This lack of affordable housing has been caused by many factors, including underfunded affordable housing programs, the high prices that come with owning a house, low wages, population increase, and policies on land use just to name a few. As we have seen throughout the past few years, the lack of affordable housing has only gotten worse. If we want to end the current humanitarian crisis in California that is homelessness, we must turn our attention to making affordable housing an immediate priority. If we don't, the number of homeless people living on the streets will only increase, and the violence and social unrest that will be a direct result of this issue will consume the cities of California.

Nationwide, there are barely any students who want to become a pharmacist. As a result, the demand for pharmacy is high. The shortage of pharmacists and it being a declining job, pharmacy chains, such as Walmart and CVS are impacted as they are now reducing their hours.
https://www.wpxi.com/news/local/nationwide-pharmacist-shortage-impacting-pittsburgh-area-some-pharmacy-chains-cutting-hours/DWIDAKBF2NCYTAVMYURGSTVA6Y/

Despite the return to normalcy after the pandemic, many students are still struggling with extreme anxiety and stress. The problem with returning to in person schooling is that students have gotten used to a more modern way of learning. The current school system in the country is not helping children in their struggles in life, and instead it adds more. With society moving forward and the education system standing still, the students of today's world are getting nowhere.
