If his mother were still in his life, or if his father wasn't so mean to him, I have a feeling he would be able to get some help from them.  Also if Madeline was still alive, they could work together to raise Jupiter by raising her through Madeline and Joseph's families. And if Madeline's parents weren't shutting her out then they could help with the baby and then once Joseph finished school, he could take the baby. Even if they had to, they could put her up for adoption. He is only 14. That would be a middle school student trying to raise a child. Plus trying to grow up and be a kid himself. How would he learn anything if he was constantly worried about raising Jupiter? think he should be able to see Jupiter and be part of her life but not raise her by himself. Another choice would be foster care, since that would allow Joseph to still see her every now and again. Even if he did raise her and have her babysat while he was at school, how would he pay for the expenses? How would he pay to feed her and buy her clothes when he doesn't have a job and is in a foster home himself. I do agree that he needs to be part of her life but he is not near old enough to raise her himself. A possible explanation to this is maybe putting Jupiter in the same foster home as him so Jack's parents could raise her and Joseph could still see her everyday. The first responsibility should fall back on the mother and father of the child. Since Madeline passed away and Joseph is too young to care for a child. The next people responsible for this child are the grandparents of the child. Joseph's father is abusive and will clearly not want another child. The only parents who might want this child are the parents of Madeline. Madeline's parent do not want another child, so the child then belongs to the state. She then needs to be put up for adoption so another family is able to care for Jupiter. Many parents will care for a child better than Joseph can. Now, should Joseph be allowed to see his child? Well, he should have seen Jupiter. However, after Joseph attacked a teacher, he might be viewed as unstable or dangerous to Jupiter.  The state then must either let Joseph see his child never see his child or let Joseph see his child but not be near him. The state most likely thinks if he does not ever meet Joseph, he will be able to handle this better than seeing a child he can never know. Also remember that the state has to deal with many cases, especially some with crazy obsessed people. Some people may stalk their child being held from them and become a larger threat. The state is only doing what they may think is best for Jupiter. As long as Jupiter is adopted by a family, she will get a much better life than with Joseph in a foster home. Maybe when Joseph is much older then he will be able to meet Jupiter and they can know each other.

Since Joseph came out of juvy and came into Jack's family as a foster child, I think Joseph softened a little bit. Become friends with Jack and being able to trust Jack's parents. Especially when Jack had his back from the time he was being beat up by the other grade 8 boys. Another part where I think Jack softened up is the part where Jack's parents give him this letter. It obviously was very important to Joseph - so important that he actually hugged Jack's mother and didn't even flinch when Jack's father put his hand on Joseph's back. This is a big change in Joseph. If Jupiter isn't allowed to live with Joseph, he should at least get to see her. Others say that Joseph can't drop out of school to take care of Jupiter or get a job to be able to earn money and raise Jupiter and other things. but I know Joseph is that kind of child who can figure things out and never gives up. Joseph is 14 year boy who is not ready to take care of a child. For one, his lack of age restricts him from having the mental capability to take care of young child like Jupiter. A 14 year kid like Joseph does not know what is right or wrong for the child, does not know simply how to take care of the child and is not responsible enough to take care of it. Raising a child requires lots patience and stamina, especially when the baby stays up all night crying. Joseph at 14, would not be able to stay awake all night with a crying baby and know what to do with it. Additionally, a child has lots expenses and Joseph can not provide for his daughter, and himself. Joseph does not have the proper education to get a well paying job and it will be a few years before he will complete his education and get a job to take care of Jupiter, and by that time she will have probably settled in with a foster family of her own. Even if this does not happen, his criminal record will probably limit his chances of getting a good well paying job that he needs to take care of Jupiter. While Jupiter is Joseph's daughter, his age limits him, as well as his mental capability from taking care of her. Also I think that Joseph will not be able to take care of her and their fore she should not be able to live with Joseph.

As much as I would love for this scenario to unfold, I am pretty sure there would be legal complications and it seems like it is too happy of an ending for a book like "Orbiting Jupiter". So, if this can't happen, Joseph should get an open adoption. Open adoption is basically when you have legal rights to your adopted child, but you still have contacts with the birth parents. So Jupiter would have two sets of parents. Joseph and maybe Madeleine and her adoptive parents. However, this might make Joseph feel even more separated from Jupiter. She might be closer to her adoptive parents. It might also confuse her. When you were a little kid, everything was about your parents. Now, imagine having two sets of parents. You wouldn't know who to look up to and you definitely wouldn't fully understand the process or the deal between your 'parents'. If Joseph didn't have a role in Jupiter's life and gave her up for adoption, it would be okay for the first couple of years for Jupiter. But, for Joseph, they would be heartbreaking. He would know that his daughter was living with other people and that he couldn't be with her. After the first few years, his wounds would probably have healed but for Jupiter, they might have just opened. What if her adoptive parents didn't want her to know that she was adopted but being a rebellious preteen, she found  out anyways. She would feel betrayed and it would open up a hole in her that would only be filled when she found her biological parents. When Joseph sees her again, his wounds would reopen and they would both be an emotional mess. This doesn't have a big chance of unfolding, but it still could happen. Joseph would endanger himself if he was allowed to take care of Jupiter. So if he did take care of Jupiter he wont do so well in school because he has to help take care so he will fail. He is only 14 so you dont know how he will treat her daughter .
