He feels like he’s like the wreckage of a ship washed up because it’s like trash and washed up on the beach, so he might feel like he would’ve been that if he had been washed in by the wave. Also most of them flotsams are just sitting there not moving unless someone picks them up and throws them away.  So the main character felt down and just sat there and thought most of his life, and that’s all he would and could think about. “I knew that I could have saved K. if I had tried.” (280) He felt responsible for the most of his life, and after many years realized that he should have forgiven himself.

he wanted didn't want to forgive himself, but when he finally did, he realized that he should have a long time ago instead of having nightmares and being afraid of loving someone.
