Fragility of Freedom - Holocaust Memorial Day 2024. Freedom is fragile and it cannot be taken for granted - it deserves remembering 365 days, however a hook could be one of the memorial days related to holocaust and genocide. Interfaith & Belief Network for Somerset, in collaboration with The GLADE Centre, has collated these materials & created new activities, to help you explore the notion that freedom means different things to different people.
80 candles, 80 years. Somerset's Candle-holder

In May 2024, HMDT invited communities and schools across the UK to design and create 80 unique candleholders. These would honour Jewish individuals murdered in the Holocaust, or non-Jewish people from communities targeted and persecuted by the Nazis.

At the heart of the project is a commitment to learn from the past, for a better future, by illuminating the experiences of those affected by one of the darkest chapters of human history.

Here in Somerset, we were recognised as one of the prestigious 80 candles. Made locally from Somerset willow with handmade symbolic fabric flowers, our Somerset candleholder is a central element in the memorial service on 27/01/2025 before it embarks ‘on tour’ to schools, community venues, libraries, faith settings, local government, museums and other venues to reach as many people as possible throughout the year.

During the year-long tour, we will host practical workshops to encourage schools, communities to make their own candleholders and flowers that can become a legacy of remembrance and to show solidarity for a better future where people are not suffering prejudice or persecution because of their faith, ethnicity or other characteristic.

Contact Liz@glade.org to enquire
