Dr. Leo Kanner article "Autistic Disturbance of Affective Contact"published in 1943 in the Nervous Child journal is the first recognition of autism as a distinct development disorder. his discription about the behavior of the 11 children perfectly describes the common attribute some autistic children share.

in 1799 a 5 year old was admitted into an England asylum and his records show he did not get attached to any other children and would always prefer to isolate himself and play his toy soldiers alone. Scholar today believe that child showed signs of Autism

Also in central France a 12 year old boy (named Victor) was found wondering the woods he was unresponsive he did not speak so they assumed he was deaf because he could not communicate properly. Dr. Itard cared for the little boy and recorded that he was unable to attach himself to people except and discovered he could hear but just had trouble with linguistics. the story of this little boy called Victor was made into a movie called " The Wild Boy of Areyron"

Also at some point mothers where being blamed for their child having autism and sometimes even taken away from these mothers for the child's own well being.

the word autistic is credited to Ernst Bleuler who introduced it in 1909 however he used the word to describe how schizophrenia patients isolated themselves.

Later Kanner proposed naming the disorder Early Infantile Autism which was used until 1982 when replaced by Autistic disorder.

Asperger Syndrome

in 1984 lorna Wing mother of an autistic child published the works of Dr. Hans Asperger which discribes another type of autism with different classification than Kenners autism. but in reality a closer look on Asperger's paper shows similar traits as Kenner's perception of autism. Today AS is its own disorder under the Pervasive Development Disorder (PDD)

in 1978 Rutter proposed of diagnostic criteria that synthesized Kenne's work . Rutter criteria was used in the United Kingdom
