  • " Good lah! Now everybody hates me, lah. I’m the bad person, lah.” 
  • Mother makes it seem like everyone is blaming her and putting her in a difficult spot. She is trying to make it seem like she is being cornered by both wong and fifth uncle. She makes it seem like she is in a pitiful situation, that way would she be able to guilt trip both wing and uncle. It might make them feel like they were too “ harsh “ on her.
  • "You see your uncle, lah. He’s so ungrateful for how well your father treated him when he was young. Now he wants to chase us out of the house!”
  • She tells wing about the fact that wing’s father treated fifth uncle very well in the past and in return of that fifth uncle is chasing both wing and his mother out.
  • She is trying to say that despite all the good things done for fifth uncle, instead of being thankful he wants to chase wing and his mother out. He isn’t being grateful. 
  • Mother is trying to show how much of a ungrateful person fifth uncle is, that way she wants to make wing think that fifth uncle is a “ bad “ person.

I Sympathise with Wing’s Mother because of the struggles she face. This can be seen from the fact that the fifth uncle only presents the statistics for profit and money, while not really stressing on helping to improve Wing and his mother’s living conditions. ‘This flat is easily worth three hundred thousand.’ ‘I sell this place, we can put the money in the bank and enjoy the interest. If not, at least I can rest out this place and we have the income.’ Saying all ‘in English’, the Uncle wanted to feed Wing with the amount of money they could get by selling their flat away while shutting out Wing’s Mother. Not being included in a conversation concerning your property makes Wing’s Mother sympathetic.

- Single mother; needs to provide for and bring up a child single-handedly
  • Eg: “your mother must still support you.”
  • "You want to go to university right? OK, even poly is not cheap.”
  • Being a single mother, she is obliged to be able to support her son financially, without the help of her partner. 
  • The mother is on her own so she is forced to handle Wing’s expensive school fees on her own. 

- Uneducated
  • Eg: “You know that I don’t know how to speak English, purposely want to go to Australia!”
  • She did not have a proper education so she was not able to learn English properly. 
  • She does not know how to speak English, which is a global language. 
  • Due to the fact that she is unable to speak proper English, moving to a country such as Australia would be very difficult for her to integrate or even feel welcomed. 
  • In addition, it would be a completely different environment for her so it would be even harder for her to fit in.

Due to her being uneducated, fifth uncle took advantage of her unability to understand english to shut her out of the argument.

Wing' mother has a lot of responisbilities as a single parent.

- " Here , you are working like somebody's slave." And "Some more, your mother must still support you. You want to go university, right? Ok, even poly is not cheap. But she's just stubborn."

Wing's mother had to support wing and to pay for his expensive school fees. Her job is also unable to give her good pay and she has to work very hard to earn money.

2ii) Atmosphere of hostility

"Wing did not realise that the sounds of the quarrel were coming from his own home until he recognised his uncle's voice."

This shows that Wing could already hear the quarrel between Fifth Uncle and his mother without even knowing that it was them showing

  • The writer creates conflict with the use of different language to exclude another character. this is evident from 'Australia? Australia? You know that i don't know how to speak english,purposely want to go to Australia. This shows that wing's mother is affected by the example Fifth uncle gave as she feels disadvantaged as she is weak in english language. Another example is "dont talk to me in ang mo weh, Madam interjected." This shows that she is extremely agitated by fifth uncle talking to wing in english as she is weak in that language. This further shows that she is agitated by the way fifth uncle and wing communicate thriugh english language which makes her feel excluded from the conversation. therefore the writer usses different languge to create tension between the characters.

    - This shows that as much as Fifth Uncle did not want to put Wing in the middle of his argument with Madam Lee, he still wanted Wing to give it a thought on who he agrees with.
