Metaphors used in the poem.

-“Sessions of sweet silent thought” This metaphor compares quiet thinking to a serious meeting in a courtroom. It’s like the speaker is looking back at his life, remembering good and bad moments, and silently judging them.

- “Death’s dateless night” A powerful image for death as an eternal, timeless void. It emphasizes the permanence of loss and the absence of those who have passed, reinforcing the depth of grief.

Reflection on Time, Love, and Immortality

Time: The sonnet is steeped in temporal reflection, “remembrance of things past,” “grievances foregone”, All pointing to the relentless passage of time and its emotional toll.

Love: Despite the accumulation of sorrow, the memory of a beloved friend has the power to transcend pain. Love becomes a restorative force, capable of reversing emotional damage.

Immortality: “All losses are restored and sorrows end” This line suggests that the emotional presence of a friend can defy time and death, granting a kind of immortality through remembrance.

How my Collage Represents the Poem

Grief and loss: Gravestones, shadowy figures, faded letters.

Emotional reflection:  People sitting alone, walking pensively.  

Friendship and restoration: Embraces, shared moments, companionship scenes.

Timelessness and memory: Sepia tones, layered textures, handwritten notes.

Shakespeare uses strong images to show these emotions. One is when the speaker says he “troubles deaf heaven with bootless cries” this shows that his prayers are useless because heaven does not answer him. Another important image is “the lark at break of day.” The lark represents joy and freedom, because when he thinks about love, he feels like the bird rising to the sky.

The sonnet reflects the idea that love gives more value than fortune or power. Even if the world seems unfair, love brings hope and spiritual values too. My collage shows this change: from dark colors and loneliness to bright light, a rising bird, and the power of love.

An example of a metaphor is “is an ever-fixèd mark” This phrase compares love to a lighthouse that guides ships through storms. Another metaphor is “Love’s not Time’s fool” which shows that love is independent of the power of time; even though beauty and life deteriorate, love does not disappear.

This sonnet by Shakespeare demonstrates the immortality of showing love as something beyond, and that even as time passes, it will not change.

My collage expresses this through dark-toned images, evoking the nostalgia stirred by the sonnet. I also included torn, fragmented, or blurred images of couples, alluding to old and forgotten memories. A woman crying symbolizes sorrow, while withered flowers announce death. I also incorporated the bell and scraps of writing that appear aged.

Love: he loves her so deeply that he doesn’t want his beloved to suffer because of him.

Immortality: he doesn’t want to be remembered, he prefers to be forgotten.

The sonnet reflects time as a force that brings both suffering and healing; love and friendship appear as immortal forces that restore what was lost and relieve suffering. My collage reflects these ideas with images of reflection, clocks symbolizing time, photographs and blurred figures representing fading memories, and intertwined hands and color photos showing lasting friendship. Soft tones and dim light capture the transition from pain to hope, complementing the poem’s message.

For me, the main theme is the constancy of true love. The poet insists that genuine love does not change under any circumstances or with the passage of time; instead, it is enduring and eternal.

 A metaphor is that of love as an “ever-fixed mark” that withstands storms without wavering. Shakespeare compares love to a lighthouse that guides and remains steadfast despite storms. In the same way, true love, even when faced with difficulties, remains constant; if genuine love exists, no matter how difficult the situation, it will remain steadfast. Another metaphor is “It is the star to every wandering bark.” For me, it represents how love can serve as a guide, just as the star guides ships lost at sea. Love can also guide us to be better people and support us in life, not only in the romantic sense, but also in our love for the things, situations, and experiences that help us grow and develop as human beings.

The sonnet also confronts the theme of time. While beauty and youth are subject to decay under Time’s “bending sickle,” love is not “Time’s fool.” Shakespeare portrays love as immune to aging and lasting.

My collage represents that despite the passage of time and how the body changes or withers like a flower, love is always there. Love is not physical, but rather about feelings and a true connection with another person.
