I don't think he realized that his father was capable of killing them, the main reason why Jonas probably left was because he couldn't deal with living in that society. Not having people understand him or know feelings on another level, not just saying what you "feel" because it goes with your situation perfectly but really feeling it.

We take a lot of things for granted, the weather, color, love, but reading this book has made me more appreciative,  that our society is more open, and accepting.

The characters seem to be one sided but that is because they are born to have no emotions. I believe the characters are believable because they seem to be like a normal human but they don't understand what affections are.
