Text: Teaching Reading to English Language Learners, Grades 6-12: A Framework for Improving Achievement in the Content Areas, Corwin Press (2007) by Margarita Calderon. 

Students will be expected to produce a lesson plan in their content areas which uses the ExC-ELL 10-Step Lesson Framework described in the text and incorporating appropriate teaching and learning strategies to develop ELL students' listening, speaking, reading, writing, and language skills. This course will include 5 contact hours and 10 hours of online and independent work. All materials, inquiries, and submissions of work will be facilitated by a Google Classroom Platform.

Location: Classes will meet in Room 237 on the second floor of Somerset Berkley Regional High School 
2:15-4:45 for High School Teachers 
2:45-5:15 for Middle School Teachers

  1. At least 15 PDPs in content (subject matter knowledge)
  2. At least 15 PDPs in pedagogy (professional skills and knowledge)
  3. At least 15 PDPs related to Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) or English as a Second Language (ESL)
  4. At least 15 PDPs related to training in strategies for effective schooling for students with disabilities and the instruction of students with diverse learning styles
  5. The remaining required 90 PDPs may be earned through either "elective" activities that address other educational issues and topics that improve student learning, or additional content, and/or pedagogy.
