Bradbury mentions this speech by writing, "He gave the orders, but Joby set the pace." (line 107). After these words, Joby feels important as he sets the tempo and the soldiers would be encouraged to keep marching. Therefore, General's speech that he gives Joby boosts his morale because of the General convincing Joby plays a major role.

At first, all Joby felt about being a drummer boy was dread and tension, to support this, the author writes, "I only got a drum...and a shield" (40-41). THis shows how unconfident and somenwat useless he felt just being a drummer boy. During these moments of tension and dread the general had spoken words of encouragement to Joby about his job of being a drummer boy. The author writes, "I was a drummer boy at the battle of Owl Creek" (181). This shows the confidence he gained despite the anxious boy he once was.

After the general talks to Joby he feels reassured he feels like a weight had been lifted from his shoulders. For example it states, " one part humble one part proud." This explains that even though Joby wasn't full confident in himself there was enough confidence to where he was ready to drum.

In the end, Joby feels assured from the general, after what the general had to said to him, in the text it states" You are the heart of the army"(140-141). This proves to Joby to be something helpful towards him since it makes him feel assured,secured and confident. Another way the general motivated is,"Head proud and spine stiff and jaw resolute."(160-163) This also makes Joby think in a new way and clear mind, Joby was massively inspired by the general than he was in the start.

But after speaking to the general, Joby's mood has changed as he felt reassured from the general's words. In the text, Bradbury said "You are the heart of the army. Think of that. This shows the general's meaning of saying that although being a drummer boy seems like a small insignificant job but it actually plays a bigger role in boosting the morale of the soldiers during the battle by the saying "You are the heart of the army".

Joby's mood changed from being disappointed that he didn't experience what he wanted, because he was just a drummer boy and nothing else. Once the general told him "you are the heart of the army..." (141-142). After the general mention of this to him he didn't feel like a drummer boy that was useless and had no meaning being. He felt useful and had meaning of being there.
