It was a church with a black congregation that also served as a meeting place for civil rights leaders. Four young girls were killed and many other people injured. When Governor Wallace sent police and state troopers to end the protests up, violence broke out a numbers of protesters were arrested, and two young African American men were killed before the National Guard was called in to end the fight.

Then-after King later spoke at the funeral for three of the girls (the family of the fourth girl held a smaller private service), continuing the peoples outrage across the country.

The support, from the nation would help lead both the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. At 10:22 a.m., an anonymous man called the 16th Street Baptist Church. when the call was answered, the anonymous caller simply said the words, "Three minutes", before hanging up. Less than one minute later, the bomb exploded, when five children were present under the church in the basement, changing into their choir robes for a sermon entitled "A Love That Forgives". According to one survivor, the explosion caused the entire building to shake and threw the girls' bodies through the air "like rag dolls"
The explosion blew a hole about seven feet in diameter in the church's rear wall, and a crater five feet wide and two feet deep in the ladies' basement lounge, and destroyed the rear steps to the church and blowing one passing person out of his car. Several cars parked near the explosion were destroyed, and windows more than two blocks from the church were also destroyed. Most of the church's stained-glass windows were destroyed in the explosion.
