Considering less than 1% of young people are entered into the foster care program each year, it is difficult for sociologists to gain much information when the population is that small.

They interviewed people in the different neighborhoods to see if there was a difference in evaluation of neighborhoods and family development. They use levels of stresses and supports which is qualitative data. The use of naming stresses and supports makes the data qualitative because it's not numbers it's descriptors of the neighborhood.

However, there are systemic issues that could discuss whether foster care creates or is a reflection of social inequality. It is hard to measure data for quantitative results needed to explain these theoretical concepts. The study also mentions that an interdisciplinary approach is essential, for instance, developmental psychological effects on how this factors into studying the effects of foster care on children is important. Another reason, this is hard to measure is because of the varying effects that each child faces.

I would say this study is quantitatively based as it features mostly statistics.

I think that one reason that sociologists have not done more research on young people in foster care is that there are so any factors and variables involved that it can be difficult to produce meaningful results. The article talked about how the four highlighted studies produced inconsistent results, but when the research design was taken into consideration, the results could be partially reconciled. Depending on how you look at data, it can be interpreted in different ways; it is not black and white, but gray. I think that this makes it a difficult topic to study, and may deter sociologists from studying it.

As the article states, a sociological approach may be able to bridge the gap between quantitative and qualitative studies. Both are important for understanding the effect of foster care on young people, but a strictly qualitative approach may miss the big picture, and a strictly quantitative approach may turn individual cases into a mere number, and may ignore the more personal effects that individuals may be facing. I think that a healthy mix of quantitative and qualitative research procedures, brought upon by a sociological approach, may be vital to further understanding the effects of foster care on children.

The study focused on the question: Is it better to leave abused and neglected children at home and provide services to the family or to put the children in foster care? The study also attempted to determine if foster care provides adequate emotional support for children.
