Are You My Mother?" is a story about a baby bird. His mother, thinking her egg will stay in her nest, leaves her egg alone and flies off to find food for her soon to be born baby. However the baby chick hatches and does not understand where his mother is so he decides to go looking for her.
Sadly he doesn't know what his mother looks like and in his search he asks a kitten, a hen, a dog, and a cow the question "Are You My Mother?"
Then he sees an old car, which cannot be his mother for sure. In desperation, the hatchling calls out to a boat and a plane, and lastly he climbs onto the teeth of an enormous power shovel.
A loud "SNORT" belches from it, prompting the bird to utter, "You are not my mother! You are a SNORT!" But as it begins to move the baby bird cannot escape. "I want my mother!" he cries. But in this moment, his fate is suddenly reversed. The shovel drops him back into his nest just as his mother is returning home. The two are united, much to their delight, and the baby bird tells his mother about the adventure he had looking for her.

The baby’s separation from his mother adds a certain tension that drives the story forward. Even as the baby bird does delightfully silly things like ask a cow if she is his mother, the reader is anxious for the baby to find his mother. The conflict climaxes in the bird’s encounter with the snort: will this huge machine hurt our little baby bird? Of course, the story resolves in a delightful way as the snort turns out to be helpful and not harmful.
