Ferdinand

Knowledge - Having knowledge can allow you to make powerful connections, though that connection could lead you down a bad path.

In The Tempest, we see that Caliban uses his knowledge of the island to help Prospero. Once that connection is made, they become friends, and both benefit because of the power they hold. This lasts until Caliban tries to do bad things.

Perspective - Depending on your perspective of a situation, you could either be helping or hurting it, especially if you think that you are above others.

In the first scene of the tempest crashing a ship, Sebastian and Antonio think they are superior to the sailors. Sebastion starts yelling at the sailors: "A pox o' your throat, you bawling, blasphemous,/ incharitable dog!" (Shakespeare 1.1.41-42). In this situation, all they are doing is just making the problem worse for the sailors and making it harder to focus because Sebastion and Antonio think they are better.

Power - If you have the power to influence people, you need to consider how they act in certain situations, though you should be wary of your own biases.

Prospero is a fairly powerful man, we see him use his power to influence the people on the island, from fairies to his own daughter. To make sure that he uses his power responsibly, he most likely thinks about how they would be acting if he didn't exert the power that he has. Like with Caliban, if he didn't show power, Prospero would have to deal with the trouble the monster would eventually cause.

ACT 3 - Power --> You can use your power to protect people even if doing nothing is more convenient, except if your help causes more problems in the situation.

To hinder Stephano, Trinculo, and Caliban's plot to kill Prospero, Ariel takes over Trinculo's voice and says, "[in Trinculo's voice] Thou liest" (Shakespeare 3.2.82). Ariel uses his power to create contention within the group so their plans get mixed up and flawed.

ACT 2 - Perspective --> A simple mistake can cause you to view someone poorly, even if you knew the person before to be upstanding.

Because of a mix-up, Trinculo ended up being under a blanket with Caliban, so when Stephano walked in, it looked like a monster. Stephano said, "This is some monster of the isle with four legs, who hath got ... an ague" (Shakespeare 2.2.66-67). Because of his short-sided perspective, Stephano believed his friend was actually a monster because of the situation.
