Settings
-West Egg
West Egg is where those with new money or those who have earned and worked for their money live. Wealth his flaunted here with big houses that look out of place, large parties, and rowdy party goers. Gatsby and Nick live here with 2 completely different houses. Gatsby in a large mansion, and Nick living in a small rented house next door.
-East Egg
East Egg is where those who have old money or have inherited their wealth live. Here Daisy and Tom live. Houses here are more of a concealed wealth. East Egg-ers rely on their manners, style and aesthetics to set them apart from West Egg-ers. East Egg-ers look down on West Egg-ers for not matching their personality to the wealth.
-Valley of Ashes
The Valley of Ashes is a gloomy low income area that is used to travel in between West and East Egg. George and Myrtle live in the Valley. The bad connotation with this place keeps West and East Egg-ers out most of the time. This is where those who couldn't make it in the time resided in this run down area.
Symbols
-Marriage
In the book the idea of staying true to the one you married is thrown out the window. With affairs being a driving force for the deaths in the book. Early on we learn of Myrtle and Tom then later how Gatsby wants to win Daisy back sparking an affair. George unbeknownst of Myrtle's affair is the odd one out of the "love square" with Gatsby, Daisy, Tom and Myrtle.
-Lies and Deceit

Majority of Gatsby stories he tells people about his background are falsified. He uses others and gossip to transfer this false persona to win Daisy back. Affairs and Gatsby attempt to recreate the past also lead in this theme. With very little people in the book known to be truthful it's hard to guess who is truly honest.

-Wealth
The idea of wealth consumes those who weren't born into money like Myrtle and Gatsby. The constant chase of money ultimately leads Gatsby to his death. The wealth aspect ties directly into social stance which played a big role for Gatsby and Daisy's relationship.
-Society and Class
Society and Class played a big role with the book and story. Tom and Daisy were upper class living in East Egg, Nick was middle class who lived in West Egg, and then George and Myrtle lived in the Valley of Ashes and were the lower class. Gatsby is hard to place since he has money and lives in West Egg but has a low social standing. Gatsby chased the idea of being a powerful in social standing and class wise. The weight of power from social standing is very influential on the characters and how they interact with each other.
-Memory and the Past
