Think about a time in which a student has struggled to express themselves.
Compose a short narrative about this event. Try to take on the perspective of the student, another student, or the teacher.

In a writing class I had a student who was an aspiring rap artist. He loved writing his music but was convinced that my class could offer him nothing. He completely shut down and did none of the work that semester. No matter how many times I told him that he was free to explore any type of writing that was meaningful to him, he was convinced that I was against him. Perhaps we both had difficulty expressing ourselves. We didn't literally speak different languages, but in a way- I guess we did.

Whenever I asked Moises to write anything, it would take him far too long, in my first-year-teacher -opinion, to get anything on paper. He wrote each letter as if he were carving it into stone. I had piles of his empty handouts and loose leaf with his name on it. One day, I got so frustrated with waiting to get words on paper, I gave up. "Let's just talk," I said.
Moises was describing a character's development, and he was so excited he got out of his seat. "At first, she was like this," he said, hunched over. "And then like this," he said, standing up a little taller. "And at the end, like this," he said standing straight.
He didn't write, but it was a very sophisticated character analysis.
