<title>Welcome to my Padlet! My name is Sarah McCarthy I am a secondary Art teacher from Ireland currently living in Madrid. I found the collaborative learning course online and I am very happy to be able to use it to progress my learning in this area. I hope everyone is enjoying the course! I have taught in private and public bilingual schools here through a range of age groups including primary. I hope my learning diary will be interesting and useful not just to me but to all of you out there</title>

<title>My experiences of collaborative learning have had varied success. I would like to try to find ways of executing it really well consistently with class groups. One lesson I described as low level collaboration was a comic making lesson with the aim of analysing comics, creating a sequence of events, organising ideas through storyboarding and developing plots and drawings in English. The lesson did involve an element of group discussion to brainstorm their initial ideas for plots and characters but I felt that after this they were absorbed in their own individual work for extended time periods. We did present and share the finished work but I could not say that this was a collaborative project. </title>

<title>A more collaborative project. Another project I did with secondary students was creating a wearable piece of Art from recycled materials. The aims were to explore textures through looking at recycling. Collect and organise a range of materials for their design and create a wearable fashion item. The groups were divided in four and they had to co-ordinate their individual design ideas taking their favourite elements from each individuals work, they had to coordinate the collection of recycled materials appropriate to their designs from home, and they worked on a single piece together organising roles within the groups to create textures from the materials. The result was that some students ended up doing a lot more than others which I found difficult to balance out. But I think they learned a lot and they really had to try to coordinate. A notable point is that just as positive social relashionships can be strengthened in collaborative learning- so too can negative ones unfortunately as students with less social capabilities can dominate or opt out leaving the burden on others and causing negativity in learning. This is a notable point that in collaborative work we must be aware of. At the end of the project students were graded individually as well as anonymously by their group members.</title>
