Commercialisation is the process of a by which is a service or product is entered into the general public market.

Formula 1 racing is a massive and dangerous sport. Involving some of the biggest companies in the world this sport attracts a whole range of sponsors. F1 biggest sponsor is Rolex. The expensive watch brand loves to put their logo all over the race tracks to boost their popularity when these races are broadcasted to all over the world. Rolex has released details of this sponsorship and they invest around 20 million per season.

Positives of sponsorship on Formula 1

Positives?
This huge investment in the sport means that they can continue to grow the sport through means of supporting their supporters. They do this by increasing the amount of seating they have to spectate this sport live. This means more fans can come and watch the sport in person, the sale of tickets increase revenue for the sport as a whole.
Rolex investing huge amounts of money into the sport Formula 1 means there is continuous funding every season so that the competition continues. This means the sport is on every year, this is a huge positive for the fans as they pay money to watch. This large investment means there is consistently scheduled broadcasts when the fans expect them.
Promotion wise, Rolex can use their huge fanbase to help promote Formula 1 races, this is great as Formula 1 Races are often spread out over a 2 week period sometimes longer. These gaps mean the sponsor Rolex can use this time to promote the event. This would result in more profit and income for both Rolex and Formula 1.

Negatives of sponsorship on Formula 1

Negatives?
Huge investment in the sport often means that this money can be wasted and not all used to its full potential. This could result in some departments of the sport being rejected and not receiving any support from this sponsorship. In addition to this, due to the huge amount of money being invested from these sponsorships, it results in many of these teams being manipulated by the sponsor. An example of this would be the team Redbull, the team has developed from sponsorship and receives huge amounts of sponsorship investments from the RedBull company. When a sponsorship starts to invest large amount of money it gets a larger say in how the team should be ran, this is bad for the sport as it starts to turn the competitions into business instead of sports. This could result in Formula 1 races being more about the outcome and who wins rather than pure racing what the sport is about, these sponsors would rather their team lose than drive faster risking chance of a crash which would cost the sponsor money to help fix the car. Promotion from Rolex could also result in new fans coming into the sport, even though more fans is good, these fans could be from a different target group that the sport aims for. This could then further result in tracks and stadiums being damaged by the new fans which would decrease the successfulness of the sport.
