International mindedness is like a philosophy; an understanding to establish knowledge and acceptance of world views. To me it can also mean that as we hear and know of events happening around the world, the ability to see and analyse in various perspectives helps us to create better understanding and harmony in matters we are dealing with.

A person who has a sense of belonging in any place in the world he or she is in. And this comes as a result of being like the saying, 'In Rome, be a Roman'. A global citizen will feel the sense of belonging in any place when he/she understands, accepts, acknowledges and lives the place's culture, thinking, moral values and takes responsibility to do things by their law and agrees to live with peace.

How can you help your students to understand the importance of international understanding as it relates to your course?

In biology, an induction class most often is used to emphasize on international mindedness. A historical background story to the topic of discussion is explained. Eg., the story of the discoverer of penicillin when introducing classes to antibiotics, the invention of the microscope when introducing microscopy classes. Now when these stories are said, it not only achieves attention of the students, but also gives a glimpse of the times of these stories, their cultural background, influences, superstitions and beliefs etc are also discussed giving various perspectives. Students are also motivated on the contribution of notable scientists from the world and this gives the. A sense of global contribution in future. Some assessments are also done where statistical data pertaining to countries or regions tell interesting facts that correlate to give the data primarily due to their ethical or cultural background. Hence when students work in these, they achieve a sense of global citizenship.

What activities have I carried out in class that has knowingly or unknowingly celebrated international mindedness?

Since I am new to DP teaching and only going to start teaching soon, I'll give an example of a task I have got in my mind to bring out international mindedness in my class. The task will be to carry out a research investigation on coronary thrombosis in various parts of the world. The students choose their country of choice and bring statistical data on rate of cases, causes and mortality rate. When students would present it in the class, they will be asked or encouraged to discuss on the cultural and ethical background of the statistical data and how far has cultural influence such as food habits of those areas affect the data. This way the students will learn new facts, get better understanding on social setting of a region influencing health. And enthusiastic students coming from various countries have interesting facts to share right from their home, giving a sense of belonging present in the class.

Certain activities in my previous teaching year were contributed by other nationalities. Example, we got different kinds of string and wind instruments to demonstrate sound production and music in a physics class that I was teaching. Some of these instruments had their origin from different traditional background of regions of India.
Another example was 'the food plate' task sheet was used by students to fill their food from their respective country or region and calculate the calories of them. These cultural and community oriented tasks/resources contributed to my class ideas of using them every time to establish the concept or idea.
