She states that the american dream is alive and that it is still a thing till this day we have people from all over the world wanting to come into america just to get their opportunity to come into the united states. When my mom came into the united states she was brought up her whole life to pursue education and to make a name for herself one day she had a lifestyle very similar to mago in the book distance between us. Her parents were married but her dad was an alcoholic and was barely home and the mom was a housewife that didn't work or drive.She grew up with 5 siblings in a three bedroom house she had to share her room with her other siblings and when she was young she was the outsider when it came to school she had to learn how to speak english and had to learn how to try and hide her accent she didn't want to be different she just wanted to fit in with everybody. She grew up to learn english and was forced by her dad to be a straight A student no matter what this eventually led her to get a full ride to arizona state but had to decline it due to her parents going through problems so she figured that if she couldn't accomplish the american dream that one day her kids will be able to live on their own and go to college.
