Thom Yorke

Thom Yorke is an artist who is constantly pushing the boundaries of his own musical ability, each album his band releases is an evolution of what came before. His music is extremely experimental yet it makes heavy use of its genre's tropes very effectively. His music is extremely somber and often evokes feelings of sadness in the listener. His band, Radiohead is heralded as being one of the greatest rock bands of the modern age, managing to stay relevant from their origins in the punk/grunge era all the way up to present day.

Koji Kondo is a videogame composer, perhaps one of the most prolific ones, everyone has heard the Super Mario Bros. theme at least once. What inspires me about Koji Kondo is his extreme versatility, he always understands the assignment. Being a composer for videogames he has to have an understanding of mood and feel and how to invoke that in music. Koji Kondo is capable of making extremely bright feel-good tracks yet also capable of making something more subdued, atmospheric or even dark/foreboding. He uses his understanding of chord theory in fantastic ways to tell a story in his music, using his classical, jazz and progressive rock influences as a backbone.

The Pixies

The Pixies are an iconic Alternative Rock band who formed in the late 90s. They are known for their very energetic and youthful style. Their branding has that signature American angsty yet playful punk vibe. I can see a lot of The Pixies in Radiohead's first album, Pablo Honey. The music feels like a product of the time and culture. Though the Pixies and Radiohead are from America and the UK respectively, the music shares a similar tone, revealing common sentiments within the art of the period, even if they are countries apart.

R.E.M.

R.E.M are an American alternative rock band who formed in 1980. Unlike The Pixies R.E.M have their roots deeper in 1960s/1970s rock n roll. They have a lot of songs that could be considered ballads. Their music, to me, is easy listening. Their sound is very clean and refined with interesting experimental characteristics. The sound of their music I find is very reminiscent of Radiohead's second album "The Bends." While The Bends has it's share of hard rock songs, "Just," many of the tracks on that album have a very clean and easy listening sound. Songs like "High and Dry" come to mind. After diving into R.E.M I find it hard to not feel that there is definitely some inspiration here.

Aphex Twin

Aphex Twin is one of those artists, for me, that I was unaware of yet their body of work as proceeded them. Born in the UK, Aphex Twin has a huge name with in the electronic music scene. They are a composer and DJ, his music has a very organic feel to it, some of his tracks I would describe as breathing soundscapes that eb and flow. When I listen to his music it feels oddly familiar to me, due to how much, it seems, that Thom Yorke wears this influence on his sleeve in his later work. After Radiohead's third album, OK Computer, which was a blend of their rock style with more electronic elements, they ventured into a completely electronic sound with the fourth album, Kid A. Kid A and the albums to proceed it are very similar to the style in which Aphex Twin situates his music. Very abstract and dynamic pads and harmonic sounds with tasteful use of vocal chops and crunchy percussive hits.

Deep Purple are an extremely energetic and high octane progressive rock band. Considered the pioneers of heavy metal and modern hard rock. They are known for their extremely tasty guitar riffs and captivating keyboard sections. In a similar way to Koji Kondo they use their knowledge of music to tell a story with their music and bring in elements from other genres, such as funk, blues and jazz.

Yes are a Progressive/psychedelic rock band. Yes are an extremely varied and experimental band. Their music feels extremely purposeful and captivating. They are extremely prolific melody writers and their lyrics are extremely vivid and abstract. Their music is extremely fun and playful, which is a key component to Koji Kondo's music. Their song structure is often extremely complex evoking the feeling of an ongoing journey.

Casiopea are a Japanese Jazz fusion band with amazing instrumental ability. They are 100% instrumental, putting the focus on the near perfectionist quality arrangements. Listening to their music sounds like something that I could imagine Koji Kondo arranging for a game he is working on. The upbeat and feel good nature, the way the music itself tells a story instead of a lyricist, it's fun and exciting.
