The theme of this poem is that it can be difficult to find yourself and achieve your goals while holding on to your values. As the speaker describes his internal conflict, the theme of the poem is also revealed. He states, "I exist in the depths of solitude pondering my true goal Trying 2 find peace of mind and still preserve my soul"(Shakur 311). Tupac reveals that he struggles to pursue his goals while holding on to his values, and when he takes time to be alone, he feels complete. The poem echoes the ideals of Transcendentalism by expressing that the speaker feels whole when he is alone. This connects to the belief of Transcendentalists that being alone is necessary and it allows individuals to connect with themselves.

Harjo employs the poetic conventions of an imperative mood and anaphora to develop the theme of being aware of your history and your connection to the world. These conventions are present as Harjo states, "Remember your birth, how your mother struggled to give you form and breath. You are evidence of her life, and her mother's, and hers...Remember that you are this universe and that this universe is you"(Harjo 312-313). Harjo's words are directed to the reader, which shows that Harjo used the poetic convention of imperative mood. In addition, Harjo repeatedly tells the audience to "remember" their connection to the world and the history of life. This conveys the theme of the poem while also utilizing the convention of anaphora.

Harjo's poem echoes Thoreau's words by urging the reader to be aware of the importance of the morning and their connection to others. This is seen as the author states "Remember the sun's birth at dawn, that is the strongest point of time...Remember that you are all people and that all people are you"(Harjo 312-313). Harjo's emphasis on being aware of nature and our internal connection to other people and living things relates to Thoreau, who also believed that the morning is refreshing. Thoreau also believed that people should seek solitude to discover their connection to the world.

Harjo's poem echoes Thoreau's words by emphasizing the importance of the wilderness and our connection to the universe. Since both authors view humanity as a part of something bigger, they are both seen urging society to explore nature and be appreciative of every living factor on this Earth.

Dickenson's poem draws upon transcendental themes, like the divinity of nature and the relationship between nature and the self. Similarly, the poem rejects science, a subject often driven by society, denouncing it as less important than nature. One could argue that because of these reasons, the poem should be characterized as transcendental.

Personally, I would not consider Dickerson's poem to be transcendental. While she does show an immense respect towards nature, she shares no other key beliefs to the movement. In Emerson's and Thoreau's work, they emphasize independence and thinking beyond the limits. Hence, I would not view Dickerson as a transcendentalist, instead a nature lover or spring lover, as she does not mention any core beliefs related to exploring one's potential.
