This Ted Talk by Julia Shaw highlights the issue of workplace harassment. Workplace harassment affects mainly women and is characterized by unwanted sexual advances, verbal abuse, physical threats, and inappropriate comments. This creates an unsafe and unsupportive workplace and highlights some harmful stereotypes where women feel unsafe and undervalued.

These graphs by the Pew Research Center show the disparity in earnings between men and women. The pay gap among workers 16+ is smaller than that for workers ages 25-34. When companies continue to pay women, trans and non-binary people less than men, it reinforces the harmful stereotype that men are more important in the workplace. The Pew Research Center also states that "Half of U.S. adults say women being treated differently by employers is a major reason for the gender wage gap."

This photo represents a female CEO. Women, trans, and non-binary individuals not being represented in leadership roles limits opportunities for these groups. They have to face structural barriers and are less likely to get chosen for a promotion than their male counterparts. This perpetuates the idea that women, trans and nonbinary voices are underrepresented when it comes to decision-making and creating concepts.

Gender Dominated Fields

This article by Dakota Murphey gives us some insight into male-dominated fields of work. A gender-dominated field is when one gender outnumbers the rest in an industry. Male-dominated fields include construction, engineering, mechanics, doctors, etc. Female-dominated careers include teaching, social work, administration, and nursing. The reason that there is such a disparity in the gender of workers in certain fields is due to societal expectations for different genders.

Work-Life Balance

In this Ted Talk by Michelle Ryan, she discusses the idea that women have to juggle career demands and family responsibilities. Society expects women to handle the majority of the child-care and housework. These expectations make it more difficult for women to work in demanding careers. Ryan dismisses some misogynist myths that women are less ambitious than men, and that is why they don't get promoted into leadership roles. She introduces the idea that work-life balance has a lot to do with someone's identity. She says that if you work from home or part-time, you are less likely to feel like you belong in a workplace. This is important because many women work these jobs so they can handle childcare at the same time.
