In 1890 Wyoming became the first state that's constitution guaranteed women the right to vote. Over the next decade, several other states joined Wyoming in becoming states that allowed women to vote. By January 1918, fifteen states had extended equal voting rights to women. Because so many states had moved this way, it lead the amendment to be ratified on August 18, 1920, two years after.

Amending the U.S. constitution was one focus of some but there was also an appeal to the states for women's administration at the polls. Some women wrote articles and circulated petitions and others worked on making soap boxes and pulpits. Many of the suffragists organized massive marches and parades on streets and stood outside the White House to get attention from the President. This showed the dedication and organization that the suffragettes had to win the right to vote.

It was established in May 1869 and its main leaders were Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. It was a female only group.

The American Women Suffrage Association (AWSA) was also a large group of the time. It focused solely on equality for voting or "Crusade for the Vote". It's main leaders and abolitionists were Lucy Stone and Henry Blackwell. They allowed women and men in the group with the aim to get as many members and a larger voice. They used a state by state strategy which they thought would have the most chance for success.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott and others organized a convention where over 300 people attended, in a place called Seneca Falls. They all agreed that women had the right to vote and that something needed to be done to achieve this. While there was some pushback from society and the press they continued to fight for that they believed in and got others to join their cause having conventions across the country and women's suffrage groups to be formed.

In the early 1900's momentum grew even though Mott and Anthony passed away on a state by state level and states slowly began to grant this right. In 1918, President Woodrow Wilson switched his objection to support and tied the suffrage amendment to the increased role women had played in war efforts and our country. Sadly, the amendment proposal failed by 2 votes.

On May 21, 1919, John R. Mann proposed the House resolution to approve the Susan Anthony Amendment and the House passed 304 to 89. Two weeks later the amendment was sent to the states and within 6 days, states began passing. Southern states were slow and opposed to the amendment but a man named Harry T. Burn was able to cast the tie breaking vote with the convincing of his mother, so cool.

And finally, on August 26th 1920 the amendment was approved and ended an almost century of protest. It took 60 additional years for all of the states to approve but on March 22, 1984 Mississippi ratified it too. To this day and forever more, women have exercised their right to vote!!
