From the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings

Bilbo Baggins is one of the most self-reliant characters I could have ever thought of. Though he struggles in the beginning to find sense in adventure, he eventually realizes his on strength in the areas of stealth and burglary, all because he tried them. He over time gains the ability to fare well in the face of dragons and in the lairs of goblins. He puts comfort behind him for the sake of learning and experiencing, and gradually unaffected by the other hobbits gossip and criticism.

"Whoso would be a man must be a nonconformist. He who would gather immortal palms must not be
hindered by the name of goodness, but must explore if it be goodness."

His ideas are largely contrary to common belief. He also recognizes the existence of chance and that one cannot be successful without the taking of risks and so forth.

Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ, as Christians believe, is the literal Savior of the Word, yet in his humility was killed by mortal men to save them in an eternal sense. However, the Jews at the time were not expecting an Eternal Savior, they were expecting a militaristic leader to save them from the Romans, and therefore missed the boat and the memo when Christ was killed on their behalf. Now, 2000 or so years later, 2.8 billion people are considered to be adherents to a faith that holds Christ at its center.
"And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house."
-Matthew 13: 57
