Name: Alice

The final ever frost fair started on the 1st February 1814. And lasted four days .The most startling aspect of this frost fair must be that an elephant was led across the river just below Blackfriars Bridge. Yet even though it was strong to hold the weight of an elephant and printing press it wasn’t completely prone to breaking. In The Times of 2 February 1814 they wrote that “in some parts the ice was several feet thick, while others it was dangerous to venture upon”. In fact,!There were injuries .

The Thames Barrier is working at a point in the Thames with a width of 520 metres. There are two types of gates in the Thames Barrier, falling radio vail gates are the ones that make this section unnavigable and rising sector gates, that sit on the riverbed allowing river traffic to come through that section. In its open position a rising sector gate lies flat on the riverbed, it is controlled by hydronic cylinders. When closed it forms a wall where no water can flow up stream to the city of London, individual gates can be closed in about 10 minutes but the whole barrier takes over half a hour to close completely. Each gate is 20 metres high and can hold back weights measured in tonnes! The under spill position allows a controlled amount of water pass through. This is helpful because it can easily be converted to its close position from here.
