She took that opportunity to show her wounds and gain pity. Alone, she is powerless but she knew if she had the affection and support of another male - she won't have to so helpless. Basically - She dictates her own path.
The Lover - That french girl was initially enamoured by the Chinese man, but under the influence of her mother and brothers - she switched off. She allowed herself to be controlled by her family, even her opinion on the man changed. She portrays a weaker, more susceptible character. Only in hindsight, when he left did she start to realise how much she actually cared about him. In Ju Dou, Gong Li was being abused by the uncle, using her to gain a son as a successor to his family. The male dominance is strong and prevalent in Ju Dou. Which can also be seen in The Lover when the Chinese Man did not ask the French Girl for consent.
