Here in Cumberland County, there is a population of about 338,430 people as of 2024, and we are the 6th largest city in the state. There is a very diverse racial ethnic mix of people here. We have a median household income of about $58,780 in 2023, a poverty rate of roughly 17%, and a significant population under 18. .The cities of Cumberland County include Fayetteville, Hope Mills, Spring Lake, Linden, Eastover, Stedman, Wade, Goodwin and Vander.

Public Schools

Cumberland County Schools otherwise known as (CCS) is a public school system that serves about 50,000 students within about 86 schools. CCS offers a variety of programs for students like career and technical education, which is called CTE courses in school. Each school has it's own website and gives all type of important information dealing with school events and different programs the school offers.

Our Community Transportation Program is in place to help provide people with dependable, safe, assessable and affordable transportation to the residents of Cumberland County. Most people here rely on themselves to get where they need to go. There are some people without this luxury so they CTP does their best to help out those people who need that extra boost.

Cumberland County has a very diverse selection of public parks and nature focused spaces to spend time in. A good example of that would be J. Bayard Clark Park and Nature Center. We have parks that have multiple uses to them like Lake Rim Park. It is a park that also has sports fields and trails. All though those are great.. Downtown Fayetteville is where most of out festivals happen. The things about Cumberland county is that there is a ton of nature places everywhere. Something things to do is go to Gillis Hill Farm and spend time with some horses or go to the Cape Fear Botanical Gardens and enjoy all the beautiful outdoors.

Historical Facts

Cumberland County began as a settlement in the upper Cape Fear Vally between 1729 and 1736 by European migrants known as Highland Scots.
Fayetteville was named after a French General that served in the American colonies' Army durning the American Revolution (1783).
Fayetteville's growth was set back by the major fire in 1831 that burned most of the city, and also by an Invasion of General Sherman in 1856.
They boosted the city's slow recovery by opening Camp Bragg, which was an artillery and temporary training facility (1918). Which is a military base that we call Fort Bragg.

Education is a big one because Cumberland County employs a large number of people in educational roles. Health care, specifically the Cape Fear Valley Systems, are the second largest employer and offers many jobs in the medical field.
