The occasion has evolved into a family reunion holiday during in which people return to family homes to visit and clean their ancestors' graves. This is when the spirits of ancestors are supposed to revisit the household altars.

Obon originates from the story of Maha Maudgalyayana, a disciple of the Buddha, who used his supernatural powers to look upon his deceased mother, and wanted to revive her. Buddha instructed him to make offerings to the many Buddhist monks on the fifteenth day of the seventh month. The disciple did this and saw his mother was released. Day of the Dead celebrates ancestors visiting their loves ones much like at Obon celebrations. Both of these holidays celebrate dead loved ones and supporting their journeys after death. There is really only one difference in that the Obon festival takes place much earlier in the year in April, but Day of the Dead is in October and carries into November.
