Over 23,000 square miles of land was submerged in the river. One of the biggest effects that this flood had was that it killed nearly 250 people. Another effect this flood had on America was the Levee collapsing at Mounds Landing in Mississippi. The Levee busted on April 21 and submerged houses with 30 feet of water. During the aftermath of the flood, plantation workers were forced to work in unhealthy conditions. Most of these people were African Americans. At least one African American was shot, due to refusing to work. The flood contributed greatly to the Great Migration of African Americans. The flood also snuck its way into music, films, and literature. One popular song related to the flood was "When the Levee Breaks" (1929).
