The Economic Development of Brisbane

If you to ask anyone on the street, “What’s an indicator for development?”, nine times out of ten they’ll say economic growth. Now there’s a reason for that. It seems like the world runs on money, with almost everything we do being done with some relation to money. Of course, that means the more money we have, the more things we can do. Money is Man’s answer to the thirst of power, with the possibilities of a dollar being seemingly infinite. It’s because of this, it is thought that the larger the economy a country has, the better, however that’s not always the case. Money is not always spent in the right places, and we do not need to look far to see that.

Right here in Brisbane, is more examples of problems with economic development that we would like to see. In the first photo, we can see how the city’s funding is being prioritized. Artwork depicting native Australian culture can be seen when walking down the street. It serves as a reminder of the natural custodians of the land, but from a different angle serves a different reminder. In the back can be seen large skyrises, those of which probably had millions of dollars funded into them, while the artwork shown may have had a few hundred dollars paid for it.

The very same building with the native artwork, is set to be ‘Brisbane’s Tallest Residential Tower’. Not only does this serve as another example of prioritization of funding, but it shows why the city is spending money the way it is. This poster highlights Brisbane’s view for the future. Instead of focusing on predominant issues, it’d rather just draw the attention away.

The outcry from minorities may not be from the lack of cultural funding, but rather the way in which it is spent. Instead of focusing funding for the sake of diversity, the city instead does it as a form of a tourist attraction. Despite more common minorities such as Torres Strait Islanders being underrepresented in the community, the city instead focuses on creating its own China Town.

Despite the millions of dollars invested into protecting the city’s image, it still cannot take away the voices of its people. This photo shows that some minorities still feel out of place, even at Brisbane, the heart of Queensland. Past all the lights lighting up the night sky, and the billions of dollars spent in the landscape, in a small alley way the true voices of minorities will be heard.

As well as the last photo, this photo helps tell us what the city is trying to do with its money; reinvestment. The city invested money into suburban business security with one goal in mind, that being to help ensure the presence of businesses within the city. By doing this, the city ultimately gains money back from the businesses.

The sheer height of the Commonwealth building shows its value within the city. Not only this, but the comparison in height amongst the buildings shows how money is prioritized within Brisbane.

Because of Brisbane’s economic development, numerous stores have sprouted up within the city, leading it to be a go-to location for numerous tourist. These people all attempt to gain money anyway they can, whether that be through employment, creating a business, or even street preforming.
