She also tries to teach the children things which shows she kind, but whilst she was protesting she became abrupt and a bit unkind to Subhi just because he didn't understand. I think this shows great maturity when she might only be 12-14. Also, even though all the trauma she's been through she is still standing strong at the end. I feel sorry for her because she never had a real childhood, with her dad dying and her having to travel on a boat to Australia. I also learnt about the horrors in the camp, and how outrageous it is that people have to spend their whole lives imprisoned in these camps, and never know other life outside the camp. He always was there for Subhi like a a big brother. I see him as a example to everyone even after he passed.

They also teach us about things that are happening in real life and how mournful these things really are.

The biggest surprise for me was when Beaver killed Eli. This really shocked me as Eli had done nothing wrong, so didn't deserved to be killed. The children's imagination carries them through the book and separates them from the crushed hope of the adults. Subhi's midnight sea is a beautiful picture of Queenie's love for him because it brings the gifts that she leaves for him. Even if it's quiet and not seen, it means Subhi has hope and his imagination is powerful. She uses the name Jackets as a way to show that they are scary and controlling. But the name Jackets is also to represent that they have power and get what they want because they have jackets and many people there can't get clothes to fit them, yet these guards get a jacket. She also knows that they won't be able to get out and be free if they don't try and do anything, so she sneaks a camera around to show the conditions in camp to try and help them escape. She is also very brave because she knows how dangerous it is if she gets caught.

The most memorable bit for me is the last part of the book. It was happy because Subhi was with Queenie and Ma looking out to the distance, but it was also sad because they were still in camp and many people were still protesting. It was also memorable when Subhi was talking about seeing the whale from Eli's story, showing that although Eli has gone, he is still with Subhi in his memory.

The biggest surprise for me was when Eli died. Eli was a really close friend to Subhi, he was like a brother to him, helping him when he was struggling and was always there for him no matter what was happening. I was also surprised with how Eli had died. Beaver killed him in a terrifying way by beating him and throwing a rock at him. It is my favourite line because it shows that Eli's memory will live on, and that he will be remembered as the boy who wouldn't go silent. 

But this also gives me hope, that even though refugees are locked up to be forgotten about, their memory will live on through others. Who hopefully will continue on to a future that is free and compassionate. She likes books that come with real events, but then a great big story comes along with this sad event.
         One thing I'd change about this novel is that Eli does not die because he set such a good and motivating example to Subhi, and Subhi really looked up to him.
