A sua grande plasticidade genómica permite uma rápida adaptação a cada um destes nichos, que são por seu lado bastante diferentes, pelo que será de esperar que existam variantes genéticos associáveis a cada um deles. Neste projeto serão utilizadas ferramentas bioinformáticas para realizar estudos de associação à escala do genoma (GWAS) usando C. albicans como objeto de estudo, com o objetivo principal de compreender melhor como é conseguida essa adaptação.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Exploring codon usage patterns in human transcriptomic datasets (2023/2024)<br></strong><br></div><div>Gabriela Moura/Miguel Pinheiro<br><br></div><div>MBIC genoma, MBMM<br><br></div><div>Se é sabido que o conjunto de genes expressos pelas células/tecidos a cada momento pode variar substancialmente, já o risco desta flutuação originar insuficiências ao nível da maquinaria de tradução não está ainda totalmente esclarecido. Neste projeto, iremos utilizar ferramentas bioinformáticas desenvolvidas in house para explorar esta hipótese, avaliando as flutuações na utilização dos diferentes codões de transcriptomas humanos relativos a patologias, por forma a detetar distorções na forma como os codões são traduzidos que possam induzir instabilidade na fidelidade da síntese proteica.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>First insight on the Portuguese exome (2023/2024)<br></strong><br></div><div>Gabriela Moura/Vasco Neves<br><br></div><div>MBIC genoma, MBMM<br><br></div><div>Com a progressiva descida dos custos de sequenciação de DNA e com o crescente conhecimento da importância do risco genético para a boa gestão de qualquer patologia (prevenção, estratificação de risco, severidade e/ou progressão, resposta ao tratamento, priorização e existência de implicações familiares), todos os países estão a elaborar estratégias para implementar a sequenciação de genomas e para majorar os seus benefícios, tanto para o indivíduo como para a comunidade. Neste contexto, o Laboratório de Medicina do Genoma está a implementar os protocolos de sequenciação de exomas completos (WES), tanto na vertente de wet-lab como na bioinformática. Com este projeto, pretende-se contribuir para este esforço, pela automatização de um pipeline para análise de dados raw de WES e extração de variantes, que possam ser utilizados depois em contexto investigacional.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Unveiling inter-kingdom interactions within the human microbiome&nbsp;(2023/2024)<br></strong><br></div><div>Gabriela Moura/Vasco Neves<br><br></div><div>MBIC genoma, MBMM<br><br></div><div>A relevância do microbioma para a manutenção da saúde dos seres humanos é já um dado adquirido nos dias de hoje. No entanto, sobretudo por limitações metodológicas, o conhecimento de todas as dimensões envolvidas nesta comunidade extremamente complexa é ainda muito limitado. Com a descida continuada dos custos de sequenciação do DNA, a tecnologia de shotgun metagenomics apresenta-se como a forma privilegiada de fornecer ao investigador a composição total do microbioma de cada indivíduo, e não apenas a sua comunidade bacteriana, fúngica, viral ou parasítica. Este projeto visa implementar as fundações metodológicas da metagenómica por sequenciaão total do DNA, como primeiro passo para identificar flutuações no microbioma total do intestino humano que possam informar sobre o seu estado de saúde.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The lab is equipped with two microarray platforms, Illumina and Nanopore DNA sequencers and NGS support equipment, computation and software.<br>Ongoing genome sequencing and analysis focus on comparative and evolutionary genomics of yeast, mouse, human cells and tissues, with particular emphasis on detection of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), copy number variants (CNVs), indels, loss of heterozigozity (LOH) and aneuploidies. Bioinformatics pipelines for analysis of RNASeq, methylomics and whole genome genotyping data are permanently being run and updated, at a dedicated computational cluster (STiC_UA) that also integrates the Genome Medicine Lab.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Additionally, the Genome Medicine facility demonstrated its commitment to public health by voluntarily conducting COVID-19 RT-PCR testing for hospitals and the social security ministry during the height of the pandemic. Impressively, they successfully carried out over 38,000 tests, including several hundred tests for University of Aveiro ERASMUS students, ensuring their safe return to in-person classes.</div>]]></description>
