The Aboriginal and Torres strait islanders use fire to care and replenish the land. Whenever fire is used for cool burns, it reduces the power of a bushfire by burning its fuel before-hand. They also use it for replenishing land after live there. The fire germinates all the plants that have been raided for fruit or nuts. These are only a few ways they use fire. They also use it for cooking and smoking ceremonies.

Aboriginals have utilized the land for thousands of years, living, thriving, and managing the country. They have become one with the country, caring for it over these hundred years. Australia's weather conditions are very harsh, and without someone to tend it to, life would not survive in this barren wasteland. Bushfires can ravage the land, burning and devastating the soil. Aboriginals use fire to manage the country and keep it safe from any dangers.

What are hot burns?

Though Cool burns and Hot burns are a few letters apart(c, o and l), they are completely different. A cool burn is used to keep the environment safe and is heavily controlled. A hot burn is a wildfire. It is dangerous, uncontrolled and, as it's name suggests, HOT. Hot burns kill animals and people, burn down homes, as well as making the air unbreathable.

Cool burning is the act of singeing small shrubs and bushes so that a bushfire will have a harder time spreading. It also helps germinate seeds and feed birds and large animals. It can also help release nutrients found in flora helping other species of plants to survive and thrive. Burning off small shrubs gets rid of fuel for the bushfires, helping us fight off the fire. It also gets rid of weeds which can help cattle and other domestic animals to feed on grass.

For over 1000 years, the indigenous people of this country have fought fire with fire (Both literally and figuratively). They burned shrubs and areas of grassland to remove the fuel for bushfires and prevent them from doing further damage. During these 1000 years, bushfires were preventable and controllable. That, unfortunately, ended when the Brit'ish Empire took over Australia. The Aborigines were prevented from doing the customs and therefore unable to do cool burns. The fuel for the bushfires accumulated and soon enough, bushfires ravaged towns and cities and devastated the environment. During the 21st century (current time). These bushfires were one of the worst we've ever seen. Trees were charred black as animals scampered off to safety. Livestock died and crops withered away. This is an example of what will happen if we don't take care of our planet.
