Two summers ago, I was employed at a local rehabilitation center to provide individualized care to a specific consumer with severe autism spectrum disorder. I was not respsonsible for constructing developmental plans or therapy sessions, but I was responsible for assisting in the implementation of them. One of my consumer's therapists constructed a series of visual charts in hopes that the consumer would successfully compartmentalize and conceptualize response chaining. The consumer did, in fact, learn how to successfully use the restroom and wash his hands.

This previously mentioned individual would attend a specialized schooling center, and learning how to interpret and follow the daily schedule really helped with time management and independence. He was able to spend more time in class, and was also always happy upon successful completion of the daily schedule.

I have seen visual supports used a variety of time with the consumer that I worked with, and it was fascinating because there were many circumstances where the general knowledge of the tasks previously presented were known, but acknowledging the visual chart really brought back the information previously learned. It was evident that having access to visual cues helped facilitate quick learning.
