What I like most about myself is the ability to listen and have a caring heart for others. I believe people notice that I genuinely care about what they have to say, and I am easy to talk to. Being easily approachable is necessary in building a strong cultural connotation with others. I strive to be someone who when people just want to talk and laugh with, they come to me. This connects with teaching as students should be able to come and approach their teacher and talk about anything they need. I chose this picture to represent my favorite characteristic because it shows me working with kids. I feel I have a great rapport with students and they feel comfortable coming to talk to me when they need to. I love being there for these students and helping them not only academically but in their own personal lives outside of school.

An important object to me is my engagement ring. I got engaged before thanksgiving on November 18, 2018. This ring symbolizes the love between myself and Brady. This ring is extremely important as the center diamond was given to Brady by his grandfather who has now passed. The diamond was from his grandmas ring who also passed in 2015. This ring is my most important object I own as it symbolizes a future with the love of my life, but also a legacy left by Brady’s grandparents!

My privilege would be where I grew up. I grew up in a small town area both in Georgia and Tennessee. I spent half my childhood in Georgia and the other half In Tennessee. The neighborhoods I lived in were safe and I never had to worry about anything happening. The city I lived in was quaint and I enjoyed living where I did. I chose this privilege as my parents always wanted us to have a safe place to live. Many people do not get that opportunity or choice. I took this photograph to represent the neighborhood I grew up in. This is a great depiction of where I grew up as many of the subdivisions and areas looked similar to this. Having this privilege gave me the sense of peace and comfort.

Cultural values that I grew up having was the ability to work hard for what I have and to keep an unshaken faith. My family instilled in me that I need to go after what I want in life and to work for it. Also, they raised me in a Christian home that went to church each Sunday. Today I have the means to work hard and rely on my faith in God. I chose this picture of a cross we have in my house. It sits right at the entry way of the house and I can see it each day. It reminds me of my values I was raised to work hard, and love God.

I chose to do the reading river for my everyday literacy practices. As you can see at the top of the river I have the Holy Bible. I grew up reading scripture and having my parents read verses from the Bible. I chose to add my favorite children's book Brown Bear Brown Bear by: Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle. I enjoyed the Junie B. Jones series. I read mostly all the books and they helped me establish my love for reading. I also subscribed to the American Cheerleader Magazines. Since I began cheering at a young age I loved receiving these magazines to keep up with the cheerleading world. My last reading literacy is Facebook and Instagram. I currently use this social media today. I read articles, recipes and posts on Facebook and Instagram.

Once I reached high school I was placed in concert choir then moved my way up to advanced choir. We snag in concerts in different areas and I enjoyed being able to participate in something I felt confident in. After high school I joined the church choir at my local church. I chose this picture as it was the first Sunday singing in the church choir.

Struggles I have in teaching culturally diverse students would be the language barrier. I am not fluent in any language other than English, so I believe communicating with students of another language will be the hardest part of teaching diverse students. I chose this picture to represent myself struggling to understand students who do not speak English. Although there are language barriers I do believe it will be a great challenge for me to take on. It not only helps me to grow as a teacher but as a person to be able to communicate with culturally diverse students.

I have learned many techniques and strategies that I will be able to use inside the classroom to help me teach these students with cultural differences. I chose to represent this section of my cultural selfie with a picture of an anchor chart. Anchor charts are great in working with students of different language cultures as they are able to have visuals of what is being taught. As a teacher I want to create a classroom environment that accommodates all students in order for them to successfully learn.

I've grown up in church and my parents raised me to understand and apply scripture to my life. I chose this picture of my Bible opened up to my favorite verse. John 14:27 "Peace I leave with you my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." This verse reminds me every day that that God is with me and I don't need to fear in this life.

I have several people in my family who smoked including both my grandmothers. I remember I would be upset that they wouldn't quit. My grandmother ended up quitting due to an aneurysm. I saw my grandmothers health deteriorate growing up and I told myself I didn't want to put myself in that situation. I chose this picture of a cigarette as it symbolizes my cultural bias towards smoking.

While completing this project, my thoughts of literacy have opened. I see literacy in different ways especially through doing this multimodal project. I see how literacy within my life including the reading river and my favorite book was incorporated into this project. I was able to reflect in many areas of my life both the simple and difficult areas. Implications I learned about myself through this project can be used in the classroom to help me reflect and understand my future students better. I was able to see my bias, privilege and discomforts, three difficult areas to talk about and explain. Since I reflected on these areas I am more able to understand the students and their cultures. This awareness of myself culturally impacts my teaching as I am more aware of what my preferences are. It is very important to reflect on yourself as a teacher especially to me able to put those bias’s aside and get to know your students. Being culturally relevant as a teacher is one of the most important aspects in teaching. Without knowing your students, you will not be able to successfully teach them. As a teacher, it is our job to teach students regardless of socioeconomic status, culture, language, etc. Viewing students as assets rather than deficits in the classroom will have a significant effect in a positive way. Regardless of language barriers, teachers should view it as an opportunity to learn and grow for the best. Students can feel tension and frustration that teachers tend to have when dealing with barriers. I believe it’s so important to include all students and their cultures into the classroom to establish a safe class culture. Funds of knowledge is also an important part of creating a positive classroom culture. Including each student and their background knowledge/ funds of knowledge will allow for the child to feel more comfortable inside the classroom. Understanding that each child brings multiple funds of knowledge into the classroom and utilizing and acknowledging that is the key to success. Funds of knowledge that I bring myself into the classroom is self care. My mom is a nurse and I have learned so many aspects of the medical field from her. I believe that the values of the school can differ from what is valued at home. As a future teacher, I want to incorporate student’s values into curriculum as much as possible. I believe students should still be able to bring their personal lives into school. I want to embed multiple literacies such as music, symbols, etc. into reading and writing as I believe it’s also important along with state curriculum.
